If anybody could explain to me what the fuck is apparently so "hipster"* about Tumblr in a way that actually makes sense it would make my year.

*not falling into the definition of "Something is popular and I don't find it funny therefore it's a hipster thing, grumble grumble, kids these days."

LOL, I love that you asked this. Every time I see Tumblr described as a hipster thing, I'm like...is there some huge subset of Tumblr I'm completely missing? Every explanation I've ever seen (there's a lot of ironic humor, people like teh pretteh, people act too cool and/or take themselves too seriously) would apply to pretty much every single website I visit, including LJ.

IDK, IDK, I think hipsters are adorable so it doesn't really bother me. But I think you're right, it's basically a "Get off my lawn" thing :)

If you go to Simon Dumenco's column in Adage you will see that he charts
Tumblr along with Facebook and one or two others. I thnk he charts their
hits, which indicates their popularity and whether they influence consumers.
He says Tumb.lr is the leading one, the powerful trendsetter, I suppose.
Clearly I don't know a word I'm talking about.
And what can you expect from somebody who lived with Randy Harrison for years. Not me. Simon Dumenco.
