Halloo, I hope everyone had some happy new year times. I had a pretty damn fun new year's eve at my unofficial-father-in-law's you-can-sleep-after-breakfast partay. Even though I had a wicked cold that I'm still getting over. Some random things:

-Naturally I was pretty excited that there were a couple DMS fics for Yuletide. I'm supposed to be pimping that fandom for the current round at [livejournal.com profile] smallfandomfest and kept putting it off, and now I'm kind of glad I did so it looks like there's slightly more of a fandom to pimp.

-I'm really into Howlin' Wolf lately. I've always liked blues music but for me his stuff goes beyond its usual "fun" category and into "This song is so perfect I am going to cry." (By the way I don't think I can ever hear "Smokestack Lightnin" without thinking of that scene in Misfits when Nathan struts on the roof in his underwear - and I'm going to laugh if I'm just making it up in my mind that that song plays there.) And yeah, I totally worked in "Spoonful" in that Stand fic I just posted because I can, though I had to do some googling to look into whether the song really works well at all on solo guitar because a lifetime of my dad's rocking has taught me nothing :/

-I will totally be watching The Americans when it premieres. YES.

-Aidan Turner looks much hotter with more hair, I want to know if we all agree on this. I'd seen a lot of gifs/pictures of him before The Hobbit but totally didn't recognize it was him. Also apparently he is from Dublin, be still my heart, etc.

This came out a little more gen than I intended? It's somewhere in between a general Abe focus and a focus on the relationship, but oh well.

New pet peeve: People who review products on the website just to say, "I can't wait to get these shoes! They're so cute!"
That's not a product review, fool. I can see that the shoes are cute with my own damn eyes.

AO3 is acting super-slow and wonky lately. It's understandable since they're still working out kinks, but it just bothers me that this "7/8 chapters" label won't go away when it's a complete fic. LOL.

My sister was listening to this song on the way to St. Louis and the "I kill my dinner with karate, kick 'em in the face" line made me bust out laughing so hard for some reason. I had been feeling nauseated that morning and laughing for like two minutes at something made me literally feel like I was going to have to have Sara pull over so I could hurl. I have a friend with this hilarious/gross chronic problem of throwing up when she laughs too hard, but this was the first time that's ever come close to happening to me.

I've come to this random realization that there are a few songs out there that have what I'm going to start calling the "ballad sigh" at the beginning. Like, when getting into the mood of a song is such a ~transcendent moment~ that the singer has to take a breath before the song starts; and the producer or whoever of course leaves it on the recording so that you know this is a deeply moving ballad.
Most deserving example: "Mother" by Pink Floyd. My personal favorite ballad sigh is Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" cover.
Least deserving example: "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" by Poison. That one sounds like somebody was like "Do a little sigh at the beginning, it'll really set the mood, yaknow?"

Sad about:

1. TxtLJ is gone!? Nooooo!
Okay, it definitely isn't something I need, especially since I don't have nice package for texting costs, but still. It was nice to be able to receive comments while I'm out shopping and stuff.

2. After putting it off forever, I finally watched the final Tennant episodes of Doctor Who. And :( quick comments with spoilers )

HAPPY ABOUT:

1. I'm going to be celebrating Halloween in St. Louis with my frieeends. I'm not sure what the specific plans are, but I'm going to be wearing this, which is kind of hilarious. I waited till graduating college to start wearing the hoochy costumes, this is ass-backwards.
Yeah, the whip is included.

2. Pulp lyrics. Approximately every 1-2 years I get obsessed with the song "Like A Friend" for a while.

3. Stoneridge Creamery Ice Cream. Seriously, I am talking about an ice cream company in my LJ because it's that awesome. They make some of the best store-bought ice cream I have ever had and I had already had my mind made up about this before I noticed that it's only about two to three dollars a container, and apparently was originally distributed only at value stores. Their vanilla has the bean flecks in it and the fudge ribbons are actually liquidy and seriously can you tell that I'm excited about this ice cream.

4. I WON THIS GOLDEN CYLON GODDAMN.

[livejournal.com profile] no_takebacks had an "Oscar Week" and my pilots BB fic got nom'd and actually won. I've never gotten an award for writing fic before. *cries* YOU LIKE ME, YOU REALLY LIKE ME.

- Leave a comment saying "round and round the garden like a teddy bear!"
- I'll ask you five questions to satisfy my curiosity.
- Update your journal with the answers to your questions.
- Include this explanation and offer to ask other people questions.

Q's from [livejournal.com profile] jolinar_rosha...

1. Which one of your fandoms' worlds would you choose to spend a month in?

His Dark Materials. It would be cool to know what my daemon would be. And the setting is vaguely steampunk, which is awesome and otherworldly but not too much so? I'm pretty sure my answer would be completely different if it was permanently living somewhere, probably a futuristic setting.

2. What was your favourite sweet when you were small?

The sugar cookies my mom makes around Christmas. I still love those, but I'm more into the toffee around the holidays now. I loved getting rock candy too, though now I don't eat it cause it's too sweet.

3. Which place have you always wanted to visit?

I've hardly gotten to go anywhere, so the list is very long. England, Italy, and Norway are high up there. If you threw me pretty much anywhere in Europe I'd be pretty damn excited.

4. What is the longest it's taken you to read a book?

In recent memory, it took me probably half a year to get through Middlesex, not so much because of length as me reading it during a couple very busy semesters.

5. What food are you best at cooking?

I'm not bad at cooking, but I don't do a lot of it. The most complicated thing I've made was beef stroganoff and it came out pretty good. The stuff that other people actually ask me to make is more baking than cooking.

I love Pogo <3

WOMULANS.

I haven't updated in forever. HI.

Random question: Does anyone know how to make your layout not put your italics in a lighter font?

-When the hell is Inception coming out to own? It seems weird for them to not even have a release date confirmed yet. I only got to see it once in the theater and if I'm ever going to write cracked-out crossover fic for it I need to *immerse myself* and all that.

-Yay, Caprica's back. I forgot how hot Sam Adama is. Unf.

-Still keeping up with Mad Men but I don't find myself having much to say about the episodes. I kind of hate the fandom sometimes and am not motivated to socialize about it, I guess.

-It makes no sense that I still haven't watched Torchwood. Just from peripherally seeing some of it as my sister watches, I feel like I adore Owen and Ianto, and I also feel like Jack is a character who is kinda misrepresented in fandom, not that I didn't already suspect that. Or I guess it's more that people don't embrace the best things about him, because I'm intrigued about how he is clearly the type of person who truly cares about practically everyone he meets, but there's mostly just emphasis on him wanting to bonk everyone and everything. Not that that isn't also true, but...

-Atticus Ross & Trent Reznor doing the Social Network soundtrack = COOLEST THING EVER. The sound is so far from what I would expect to be in a movie about Facebook that it makes me excited to see the film. Yeah, I actually love Trent's ambient stuff as much as the metal/industrial stuff. The goth kids can cry in their cake about it, I ain't even mad.
BTW, I was the last person to find out that Trent married the singer from West Indian Girl, but she plus the Ross/Reznor duo made an EP under the name How To Destroy Angels which to me is a really lame name, but whatever. I've been listening to it a lot.

-I got laughed out of the kitchen yesterday when I was saying something about Ramen noodles and accidentally said "Romulan." Yeah, STBB is melting my brain, and I still feel like I'm driving blind with the damn thing because my beta reader's only gotten through about half of it. And it just gets more and more viral, like, I could tell you the entire friggin' life story of the mirror characters who only appear a couple times (and in the case of Spock and Kirk's history, I probably will in another fic), or I could tell you the life stories of a couple of my OCs (but I probably won't). Little things about the whole thing make me happy, like the fact that I'm posting the day before Halloween XD

things.

1. Had to miss out on a wedding I was planning to go to because of an incapacitating migraine. This is the second time I've ever had one that was so bad I had to throw up. (My sister managed to make me laugh, though: "You couldn't even finish your banana. You're so pathetic.") At least it wasn't like last time when I felt like I couldn't even lie down because any pressure to any part of my head seemed to make it worse. I kind of wanted to throw things at everybody who asked me "Did you take something?" though. Cause first of all, migraine. Secondly, yes.

2. The new Arcade Fire leaked and is awesome. I love "Modern Man" and "Ready To Start," though with the latter I get that weird they-should-have-written-the-song-this-way feeling, namely, I think the chorus should be a bridge.

3. "Lothario" is my new favorite word. On the other hand, I googled one of my favorite original character names and found that it's a goddamn Pokemon. FML.

4. On the beginning of season 2 of Lost. Jack and Sawyer are like the two halves of Leonard McCoy and Jack got all the boring parts. I love Jin now. My friend Nerd compared our general social group to the characters of the show and I ended up being Sun. Cause I'm "full of secrets." LOL. Nobody got to be Sayid cause Sayid's too awesome, I guess.

5. Seriously trying not to get carpal tunnel syndrome (LOL), trying to eat more protein. I feel like I've gained a couple pounds and I'm quite happy if I'm right.
ninety6tears: jim w/ red bground (Default)
I guess some of you probably saw my accidental text post yesterday, which led me to a panic for about five seconds thinking my journal had somehow been hacked. It would have been really obvious I had just accidentally replied to a comment notification if it was something like "When are u picking me up?" instead of a...Coke rewards code. LOL

Dropped my K/L big bang so that I don't have to worry about it again before I skip town. I didn't devote as much time as usual to polishing it up so I hope I didn't forget to fix anything :/ I'm feeling weird about that fic. Like almost ambivalent, because I just have no perspective on it for some reason. It's not my best, it's not my worst.
P.S. I am completely confused about whether I'm allowed to start cross-posting/what the next wave is even going to be/everything to do with this BB.

Rejoice, rejoice, the 30 day music meme is over:

Day 22 - A song you can't help but air-jam to

ninety6tears: jim w/ red bground (Default)
Between having a stuffy cold and really bad cramps, it took me forever to get to sleep last night, and then I wasn't able to wake up till almost two. Gruggghh I wake up in such a crappy mood when I sleep in too much.

But I should not be in a bad mood because the boyfriend and I are going to Florida and Universal Studios in a couple days. I'm pretty sure he only wants to do this so we can go the Wizarding World, which is funny considering how much convincing I had to do to get him to read the books in the first place.

Day 21 - A song that gives you shivers
Day 22 - A song you can't help but air-jam to

Stina Nordenstam - "People Are Strange." Cover of the Doors tune. Sort of.

ninety6tears: jim w/ red bground (Default)
Who thought up until a couple minutes ago that To Write Love On Her Arms was (a stupid name for) a band? THIS person. You may now laugh and ridicule.

Guhhh my sister made german chocolate brownies with Nutella instead of icing and they were SO GOOOD but now they're gone : (
I want veggie chips too, dammit.

Day 19 - A song that turns you on songs don't do this.
Day 20 - A song you've listened to after a break-up
Day 21 - A song that gives you shivers
Day 22 - A song you can't help but air-jam to

Eels - "Efil's God." Has nothing to do with break-ups, I just remember that the first time I listened to this album was on a bus the day after I broke up with my second bf. I would not trivialize the experiences that inspired Electro-Shock Blues by listening to it as break-up comfort unless it was to remind myself that things could be much, much worse. You know, I could be in rehab, two of my family members could have died in the same year...

ninety6tears: jim w/ red bground (Default)
I'm auctioning a fanmix for [livejournal.com profile] gulf_aid_now. Yippeh.

I'm sick of this hot-ass weather. I just don't like summer most of the time. I've never understood the big deal. If I'd grown up in schools that had decent AC systems I would've been constantly complaining that we didn't get a three-month spring break instead of the summer off. Or fall. Fall is the best.

Day 18 - A song that makes you laugh
Day 19 - A song that turns you on
Day 20 - A song you've listened to after a break-up
Day 21 - A song that gives you shivers
Day 22 - A song you can't help but air-jam to

Soul Coughing-"Down to This." As nonsensical as most Soul Coughing songs tend to be there is usually a theme, and I'm pretty sure this song is about killing somebody and then stashing the stiff. Which is why the lyrics are hilarious. "Like a boiling pan of ratatouille," indeed. I love a lot of Mike Doughty's recent stuff, but I kinda miss the ridiculousness of the SC days.

ninety6tears: jim w/ red bground (Default)
We have this ridiculous amount of marshmallows at our house, I think at least three whole bags, which makes me really want to make some corn flake treats. (Yeah, like rice crispy treats but with corn flakes...It's actually the most awesome thing ever. Mmm, texture.) So I'm sitting here wondering if Dollar Tree could hook me up with some super cheap cereal and if it's likely to start raining cats and dogs and unicorns again while I'm out.

Many are talking about the Game of Thrones show which makes me remember I've been halfway into the audiobook of GoT for a really long time. I'm really bad with listening to audiobooks because I always just wanna jam to some music in my car and forget that I have BOOKS for my LISTENING PLEASURE.
(Actually, would anyone want me to upload that by any chance? The R. R. Martin audios seem to all be out of print. I'm not particularly in love with the reader, but he's not bad.) So what's the deal with the show only being named after the first book? They just thought it sounded cooler?

OH MY GOD MY CAT WON'T GET OUT OF MY FACE. Seriously, I'm very happy she isn't the bitchy little attacker she was after we got her fixed, but I cannot ADJUST to her need for AFFECTION. Soon as I hit post I'm gonna pet this thing to death.

Day 17 - A song that you want to play at your funeral

Lou Reed - "Perfect Day."

ninety6tears: jim w/ red bground (Default)
Okay, I stayed up way too late last night pretty much doing nothing but reading fic and watching Lady GaGa videos. I think I've watched "Alejandro" about half a dozen times now, I'm not even kidding. WTF HAPPENED. POP MUSIC IS ACTUALLY CATCHY AGAIN? And it doesn't help that the 'jandro vid is like an epic seven-minute love letter to all the best Madonna videos.

So I finally finished some show seasons that aired forever ago, and here are my thoughts.

If you're on my f-list and watch those shows, there's a good chance I stalked some old reaction posts but felt kind of weird replying to them way late. Eheh.

Meme snagged from [livejournal.com profile] kerrykhat:

Give me a character from any fandom, tv show, movie, book you know that I know and I will tell you:

a. My favorite thing about that character.
b. My least favorite thing about that character.
c. One person I would ship them with in their own verse.
d. One crossover ship for them I think would be neat.
e. One crossover universe for them I think would be even neater.
f. Their ship from hell.
g. Their song.
h. The title of their biography or autobiography.
i. The last bad dream they had.
j. How they're gonna shuffle off the mortal coil, if they haven't already.

Frank Zappa & Mothers of Invention - "You're Probably Wondering Why I'm Here." This was something of a cracky party song among my friends for a couple years. It never fails to amuse me how much my dad absolutely loves this album, from front to back.

ninety6tears: jim w/ red bground (Default)
I seriously need to get it together and put everything of my Trek big bang into one document, cause right now snippets of it are all over my Gdocs and my private LJ entries and my private DW entries and um, written in notebooks and how am I supposed to get a word count out of this hot mess? Estimation is somewhere around 7K so far, but LOL, I don't think a third of the stuff I've written is staying in?
I really shouldn't have brought up my novel the other day cause I spent most of my time making my brain hurt over the ending/sequel last night.

Day 13 - A song that you listen to when you're angry
Day 14 - A song that you listen to when you're happy

Day 20 - A song you've listened to after a break-up
Day 21 - A song that gives you shivers
Day 22 - A song you can't help but air-jam to

PJ Harvey - "One Time Too Many." I...actually don't generally listen to music when I'm angry, ever, but this seems like it would be a good choice. The first PJ song I ever heard and still my favorite of hers.
And LOL, say what you want, but Batman Forever had one of the most unexpectedly kickass soundtracks of all time. At least it also happens to have my favorite songs by U2 and Offspring, so.

ninety6tears: jim w/ red bground (Default)
I was looking over [livejournal.com profile] flowrs4ophelia's shoulder today while she was editing a character outline thingymabopper and was all "Damn, girl, how many characters are in that damn novel?" And then proceeded to have a little queen-out about how I feel like mine isn't a proper fantasy novel because "How many books in the genre only have like three characters you're supposed to care about?" while I was ironing my shorts. Okay, the answer is quite a lot if I think about it, but I find whatever excuse I can to complain about the damn thing.
uh, let's cut the rest of me pseudo-angsting about my writing, k? )

Day 12 - A song from your favourite album

Day 21 - A song that gives you shivers
Day 22 - A song you can't help but air-jam to

Joy Division - "Transmission." I'm going to cheat and say the Substance anthology is one of my favorite albums even though it's not an album, cause if I literally had to physically pick a limited amount of CDs to live on, I need like a sampler of all that is Joy Division.

(What the hell, I STILL haven't watched Control...)
ninety6tears: jim w/ red bground (Default)
So this is 24 hrs. old-ish therefore old news around LJ by now, but I'm totally flailing about the revival of Tony Kushner's Angels In America, a.k.a. probably the only play that could motivate me to travel to see it, especially since Zachary fucking Quinto is playing Louis, which is so perfect I am almost incoherent about it. I mean, jajkajksljdka. That is an extremely difficult role, but I can totally see him nailing the political bitchery and...well, everything else. EEEEEE. Can't wait to find out who's playing Prior (a.k.a. one of the greatest characters I can even think of OMG OMG). Or the angel. Or EVERYONE.

I had a dream that a third celebrity died but I don't remember who it was. Somebody like Maggie Gyllenhaal, I don't know.
I also had a dream about a week ago that I was back in high school band class. Entirely normal day with Mr. Curry, down to him sharing the bright ideas he gets at three in the morning because the man literally never sleeps. It made me really sad. WTF why am I dreaming about high school when I just graduated from college :/
