Title: A Game Called Life
(one-shot, 6413 words)
Characters: The Weasley twins
Summary: "What the spell is supposed to require is a capacity for certain wands to recognize not only one, but two masters."
Rating: PG-13
Warning: Concerns a canon character death.
A/N: Apparently there is no canon on what Fred and George's wands are made out of, so I was at liberty to make it up. (In the movies, their wands don't even look alike, but I had to contradict that.)

I totally sat down at the computer to look up a word. Thirty minutes later, LOL, fandom secrets and updating again. The highlight of my venture in distraction from coming up with a thesis is somebody pointing out that between the botany and generally being secretly badass, Neville Longbottom + Hikaru Sulu = the same person. I'd have a hard time sorting TOS Sulu, but reboot!Sulu is kind of unquestionably Gryffindor. Even though that parking brake thing almost earns him Hufflepuff. Sorry, Hufflepuff, you're not that fail.

Yeah, I'm not the only person who sorts pretty much every fandom by Potter houses...Right?

And a little voice tells me to go do something fucking useful. But here's a gorgeous picspam of the Australian Ballet.

And the word was "dilettante," which means pretty much what I thought it meant.

Good god...I laugh every time I go to my tags list, because a bunch of really weird tags I was using ("ojibwa legends!" "influence of western culture!") when I typed notes for essays in private entries when I was at the library are still there, despite the entries being deleted. I keep wanting to check if other people can see those...though I can't imagine y'all are like, checkin out my tags list for a good time on a daily basis.

Since [livejournal.com profile] ontd_startrek is doing some collage or something of all the members who draw themselves as Starfleet officers, and my art skills are laughable, [livejournal.com profile] flowrs4ophelia drew us both. I requested she make me a mirror-universe Vulcan BAMF and was very satisfied with the results: http://flowrs4ophelia.livejournal.com/122394.html#cutid2
Unfortunately those looked better on paper. Totally putting mine on my door at the ole dorm next year :D :D

So how about that Harry Potter movie? Read more... )

I follow qaf_drabbles, but as I am not one for writing from prompts, I have never contributed to the weekly themes before. But they recently repeated the crossover theme and I was soon tempted by my growing enthusiasm for His Dark Materials and was thrilled by the idea of coming up with dæmons for B & J and oops, I wrote three.

Does anybody remember the "Ooh, you touch my tra-la-la" song that was floating around the internet several years ago? My friend and I were randomly reminded of that and were searching for it on YouTube the other day when we came across this.
It's so tasteless and wrong and arguably not that well-made, but hilarious. NWS?

I have a lot of comments to make on the final Harry Potter book in regards to adapting it into a film, and since my initial review was long enough, I decided I'd do an entirely separate entry about it...

Even though I have loved Harry Potter for years and could be pressed to occasionally peruse fanart or fics, I don't know if I will ever be involved heavily into the actual fandom. I think the reason for this is because it is so intensely popular that there are wankers everywhere. The age and demographic is so universal that finding people you can actually agree with and relate to on a lot of things seems kind of dauntingly difficult, especially when there is an overwhelming amount of characters/ships/theories involved, both in- and outside of canon. In the past week, I have only dwelled briefly in my post-OOTP movie excitement, and I'm already pissed off. *sigh*...Wankers who bitch about how they hate the movies because, "My favorite part of the book isn't in the movie whine whine.." like they literally don't understand that it's impossible, when adapting a book into a movie, for them to be exactly the same. And this dumbass today who accused Sara of not being adequately obsessed because she is not currently rereading any of the books for the third time in preparation for the next one. Uh-huh. Even though her reasoning was that she wanted the books to feel new to her when she picked them up to reread them for as long as possible. Even though she's been in-and-out of hiatus on finishing her Marauders-era fic for years, but is not giving up on it. It feels like the fandom is full of a bunch of snobby losers who compete over how many tiny-ass little details from the book they can remember and who's theory is going to be right. OMG SHUT UP. SO NOT MY FANDOM TODAY.
This is kind of making me realize that I'm extremely favorable to smaller fandoms. I mean, BBM has a small bunch, and that was the first fandom I really got into on LiveJournal. I just like fandoms that strike a good balance between sadly inactive and unpleasantly huge. Even though some people might get bored with the lack of bustling activity in a smaller group of fans, I've had experiences of running into the same people on different websites or message boards, and I think it's kind of cool. And you could even argue that a small fandom has louder staying power than a big one after the show is cancelled or the books are finished, etc., because it's easier to make friends. People form really interesting relationships through fandom (christ, just ask "the wives") and sometimes that keeps them coming back when the actual subject of the fandom isn't currently the first thing on their minds.
Oh, and of course the other advantage is troll patrol. In a huge fandom, when the idiots are just everywhere, it gets to be kind of a mess that people can't really fix by banding together. But when everybody more or less knows each other and suddenly some total psycho shows up out of nowhere, you get more of a one-against-the-rest level of ultimate wank combat.
It's kind of funny when I go on and on about stuff like this when I haven't actually been involved in tons of fandom life...

As usually happens right after I finish and post fic, I've fallen headlong into a lazy writing slump. Even though I didn't go to bed last night until about 3:30, I managed to sleep only a sane nine hours, got up, took a walk, read The Subtle Knife for about half an hour. Poked around on the QAF IMDB boards (which are slowing down a lot...*tear*), ate some ravioli, and fuck - look at the time. It's really insane how I almost don't have time to hang out with friends between all the stuff I promised myself I'd do more of in the summer since I don't have time to do it during classes.
Seeing the absolutely awesome latest Harry Potter movie kicked up my excitement about the next book coming out (and I just now figured out that I'm going to be out of town the night it's released and won't be able to engage in the celebrations with [livejournal.com profile] flowrs4ophelia, dammit). Up until then I'd been kind of...almost exhausted by the thought of it, because I'm intending on avoiding the internet and even, you know, restaurants so as to evade fucking up the event that will undoubtedly draw spoiler-trolls into revolutionary levels of rampant live-or-die quips. I have seriously been exposed to major spoilers for literally everything I've ever been heavily into (though with Queer As Folk, I got lucky...I did read something on the back of the DVD cover about a bashing, but after watching that episode realized I had somehow completely blocked it out of my mind and forgotten about it, probably because I just hadn't been into the show yet), and this is like THE MOST IMPORTANT THING EVER. The really hilarious thing is that even though I hate spoilers, I still always have this sort of compulsive need to read the last paragraph of a book before I start it. I know there are a lot of people who also do this, but I seem to be the only person that doesn't actually like to be prepared for whatever happens in the end, I just have to do it. Usually last paragraphs don't actually give anything away, though. They prepare you for a happy or a sad ending, but not the reasons why.
I haven't actually been doing a lot of thinking about the possibilty of specific characters dying, at least not the ones that haven't been widely discussed, probably because it will lessen the impact of the deaths if I've sort of adjusted myself to the thought of them being the one that dies. With Rowling, I have a feeling she might kill off somebody that will make us go, "OMG, you're killing them!?" as well as somebody more obvious. Sara brought up, though, that she mentioned in an interview how she had one death in mind but forgoed that death for the death of two others. A lot of people think this points to the twins. At first, the idea of them dying makes me really really sad, but then again...if they went out in some perfectly heroic way I think it would actually do tremendous justice to their characters. If Rowling kills only one of them, I will be so mad.
My "theories"?
Remus has to live. (because how could she do that?)
Snape has to die. (because he is a tragic character.)
One or more of the Weasleys has to die.

And I just don't know at all about Harry. There are some good arguments for his death being the appropriate ending, but I still find it really hard to picture how the hell the story would end if that happened. And in a way, it would just feel so...predictable. I mean, if I put myself in JKR's place, I just can't fathom actually having the guts to end the books that way. What my actual emotional response to either outcome would be remains to be pondered, but if Harry Potter dies, I will be commending Rowling for having some serious balls.

The current bi-weekly challenge at [livejournal.com profile] fanmix is "iPod", for which members are encouraged to do a mix of what they think would be on their favorite character's iPod. Or...tape deck or record player or whatever. Anyway, I decided a Fred and George mix would be fun.

Allow me to introduce my idea that it is not that farfetched to imagine that witches and wizards may, on occasion, have access to and enjoy Muggle music. Given that they apparently have rock bands, they've possibly borrowed a lot of pop culture from Muggles. I find it quite easy to imagine Muggle-borns crossing into the magical realm and taking rock and roll with them, possibly exposing open-minded purebloods to their favorite bands. Given their father's interest in Muggle technology, Fred and George might have eclectic access to "Muggle rock" and discover that they quite like it. And even though it's a pain in the ass converting electronics so that they work in the magical world, they find it's worth it so that they have something upbeat to listen to while they stay up until the wee hours trying to get that perfect prank spell to work, accidentally blowing stuff up and pondering that Pulp sounds a whole lot like the Weird Sisters.
