RL is kind of meh. My best friend is moving a lot farther away and I will miss seeing her more often than a couple times a year. Also I am finding it harder and harder to drag myself to work these days because I'm getting so fed up with how inexplicably freezing it is at our office - I'm talking thick socks and fingerless gloves in an indoor workplace. WTF. And the supervisors complain about it so casually, like it just always has been like that. I DON'T UNDERSTAND.

-While on Tumblr I frequently find myself thinking, not exactly negatively, "Man, it must be really nice and fun to give a fuck about John Green." In an act of true pettiness I caught myself looking at how many fics The Fault In Our Stars has on AO3 just to see if I needed to feel bitter (you know, as a forever frustrated book-fandomer for other things). I don't. I have it on reliable opinions that Will Grayson, Will Grayson is a good read but unless this guy is like the Shakespeare of YA fiction - and I'm sure he's not - I may tire a little of every single book blog acting like he's the best thing since feminism.

-Probably the only prevalent thing I hate about a certain niche of Trek fandom is the "OMG IS HE OKAY?! HE LOOKS SOOO SKINNY" comments I predictably see all over Chris Pine photos (which amusingly happens so often you would think people would realize that just might be closer to the default when it comes to his body type). I mean, there is the occasional person who will pretty much frankly imply that they enjoy objectifying him more when he has a little more bulk on him, and that's just being honest, but with some comments there's this very distrusting asshole part of me that just feels like I'm watching the fangirls fall over themselves in a contest to see who can be the most accepting of Chris Pine in his less skinny states, and I find that just as annoying as the SPN fans who think that Jensen Ackles is gaining too much weight (which was funny as hell to me, because I hadn't actually noticed he wasn't quite as thin now until it was pointed out to me).

-ARGH, MORE OF MY PETTINESS. I could never complain too much about any kind of activity in my teeny-tiny book fandoms but man, have I been seeing some fancasts on Tumblr lately that make me go NOOO. Even though I'm not sure I can logically make a case against the Cassie Maddox = Rose Byrne thing that I've seen in multiple places it still gives me a headache cause to me it is just so off (and in general I've tried really hard to like Rose Byrne but it isn't happening). I say this as if fancasts have any standing on movies that don't exist yet, LOL.

-The best thing about this season of Mad Men, amirite:

I still can barely stand that fandom, BTW. I can't seem to browse the Tumblr tag without seeing someone call Peggy a bitch. (No lie, I would be pretty scared of Peggy, but that's part of why I love her, especially since I never could have seen myself saying that back in S1.)

In case some of you didn't know, I have serious issues with this show's fandom. I don't know how there's something about it that attracts the only one that is actually so bad that I usually can't stand to participate in it at all, but for some reason it does. I feel like I'm alone in this aversion, but nothing about a lot of the reactions to this episode changed my mind.

Anyway. The Other Woman )

Ask me my Top Five Whatevers. Fannish or literary or otherwise. Any top fives. Doesn't matter what, really! Fandoms, ice cream flavours, cartoon moments, women in my fandoms, OTPs, ideal holiday destinations, goals for the future, celebrity crushes, books I wish would be made into movies, love songs. And I will answer them all in a new post (or in comments). Possibly with pictures.

And stealing this from [livejournal.com profile] taragel...

So if you found out I'd written a book....what kind of book would you expect it to be? Romance? YA? Mystery? Something completely different? What style/tone/characteristics do you think it would display? Funny? Sexy? Angsty?
(I don't know if people will go for this one but since I actually have a novel in the works it could be fun to see what people might guess.)

Sooo tomorrow I'm supposed to basically go take a written exam to qualify for a job that involves scoring written exams. I'm weirdly nervous about this. It's awesome to find something that you actually are supposed to have a four-year degree to qualify for (seems like most jobs make undergrads either under- or over-qualified) and is, you know, pretty related to what I majored in, but I can't help having my Inadequate English Major insecurities over the whole thing. Like, hell, I'll volunteer the information that I write my ass off all the time and that I got an English degree, but from my experience I have no clue at all if I am necessarily good at writing when it comes to the technical, formal stuff.

A couple links:

-I meant to share this the day I saw it, but [livejournal.com profile] waldorph wrote an awesome post on THE SUBJECT OF MOVIE AUs/FUSIONS. I couldn't agree with it more, though I should really shut my mouth, because I've never gotten around to writing one. But hey, I've THOUGHT about it.

-I'm not nearly familiar enough with the world of comics, but I think some may appreciate this: 7 Superheroes Who Should Just Be Acknowledged As Bisexual.

Two things that have made my week:

1) [livejournal.com profile] jolinar_rosha drew me some fanart for Rising Sign as a b-day gift, and I'm all bouncy about it. Starbuck with her new crew loungin' on the grass.

2) I pulled a marathon of catching up on Mad Men after falling behind somewhere in the middle of S3. Read more... )

I absolutely hate that every once in a while I figure out that there is a Limp Bizkit song that I like. And that I've been listening to "Radio Is Dead" on repeat for like half an hour. And appreciating the irony that it was never a hit.
I'm recalling that my best friend's dad reportedly went through a Limp Bizkit phase, which is still funny.

I wish I had time to put up a big long reaction post after catching up on the episodes, but I will leave it at: CAPRICA IS GOOD. I haven't shipped an already married pairing so much like ever. Once upon a time I shipped Don/Betty, though :( Or is it Bettie. I think it's Betty.
Anyway, I'm starting to realize that grief is kind of an exceptionally interesting thing to me in terms of what fiction deals with. Obviously it's really hard to convey it as something other than a hard-to-watch angstfest, but when it's done well...Yes. BSG was always kind of intriguing to me in that it was basically an entire cast of grieving characters (+ Baltar? LOL) from the start. The opinions of other viewers that annoyed me the most were the ones that seemed to fail to take this into account.

And then of course exile/separation/expatriation/things-that-mean-you-can't-go-home-again which are always the perfect recipe for slightly angsty but golden character growth are like YES YES GRABBY HANDS GIVE IT TO ME YES.
And um, current plot bunny that I've been writing snippets of in the middle of my classes is sorta guilty of this tendency. FML, why can't I just write some fluff every once in a while.

The first thing [livejournal.com profile] flowrs4ophelia said to me the other day: "Dude. I had this dream that I was watching the next Star Trek movie...or the season premier of Mad Men. I couldn't tell the difference. Mad Men was Star Trek! Star Trek was Mad Men! Don Draper was walking around the Enterprise like he owned the place, And Betty was nurse Chapel, and Chapel/McCoy was canon and very awesome." And I kind of wanted to strangle her and be like GIVE ME YOUR BRAIN because my dreams are never that awesome.

When does Mad Men even come back, I can never remember.

MEME TIME AGAIN.

Ask me my fannish top five anything and I will answer them all in a new post.
