-A-HA: Chris Pine indeed gains weight to play Kirk. (I like the bit just past the six minute mark when they talk about a weird summer job he had. His laugh is so cute you just want to smack him. And the beard. AUGH.) Also, Letterman always reminds me very strongly of my dad which I think makes him a little more entertaining to me than to most people.

-The trailer for the next season of Teen Wolf makes that show look, I feel, quite a bit cooler than it actually is (heh?). Sometimes the actual horror factor of that show is decent, though. Holland Roden continues to be prettier than everybody else.

-Saw STID a second time. I officially believe that it is not just in my head that Chris Pine is a good actor, even if he isn't spot-on all the time. That reaction shot after Pike tells him he believes in him destroys my life. Also, I have surrendered completely to shipping Bones/Carol. I feel sort of guilty about how I'm kind of inserting this into where Bones/Chapel used to live in my heart, but since this one has maybe a snowball's chance in hell...

STAR TREK

Took me forever to get to writing this; spoilers ahead!

INTO DARKNESS )
ninety6tears: jim w/ red bground (Default)
The long long longass wait for the next Star Trek movie has effectively managed to make me more nervous than excited about it, because my fangirl mind works that way. The title is a little bit awful, but oh well. Sadly I'm going to have to go by myself two or three hours out of town if I want to see that nine-minute preview because Shep doesn't care about The Hobbit and Sara hates IMAX. This doesn't actually sound like the worst idea to me - I don't mind going to films by myself - but I might just settle for getting excited about the trailer :/

Even having only seen a couple episodes of Merlin, I'm a little sad it appears to have been cancelled?

RL is kind of sad lately. By sheer dogpiling coincidence I'm feeling a little bit let down by several different people for several different reasons and it sucks.

Buy yay, winter is coming?

Think I'll get dinner and watch Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead.

These were fun. I have no doubt that I may end up doing some epic 2-disc fanmix for ITW/Likeness at some point, but this was a good place to start :D

The Counterfeits

Fandom: Star Trek AOS
Rating: M
Characters/Pairings: Kirk, Pike, McCoy, (sort of) original characters. Slight bit of Kirk/OC, eventual Kirk/Spock.
Genres: mystery/thriller/sci-fi/drama/romance
Summary: Several months after a disastrous investigation, Detective Jim Kirk has transferred out of New Dublin's murder squad and thinks he's done being anywhere near homicide. But just when he's settling into a different job, a dead body shows up with a stolen identity and a very familiar face. Reluctantly reunited with his old boss Christopher Pike, Kirk is asked to work a bizarre undercover operation in order to not only find out who killed the victim, but who created him. (Fusion based on Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad series - mainly The Likeness w/ some elements from In The Woods.)
Warnings: Violence, mentions of canon character death, semi-explicit sex, dubious methods of detective work, bogus science, psychopathy, unsolved mysteries, and rather a lot of smoking and drinking.
Word Count: ~84000

the lady's questions within )

Sooo tomorrow I'm supposed to basically go take a written exam to qualify for a job that involves scoring written exams. I'm weirdly nervous about this. It's awesome to find something that you actually are supposed to have a four-year degree to qualify for (seems like most jobs make undergrads either under- or over-qualified) and is, you know, pretty related to what I majored in, but I can't help having my Inadequate English Major insecurities over the whole thing. Like, hell, I'll volunteer the information that I write my ass off all the time and that I got an English degree, but from my experience I have no clue at all if I am necessarily good at writing when it comes to the technical, formal stuff.

A couple links:

-I meant to share this the day I saw it, but [livejournal.com profile] waldorph wrote an awesome post on THE SUBJECT OF MOVIE AUs/FUSIONS. I couldn't agree with it more, though I should really shut my mouth, because I've never gotten around to writing one. But hey, I've THOUGHT about it.

-I'm not nearly familiar enough with the world of comics, but I think some may appreciate this: 7 Superheroes Who Should Just Be Acknowledged As Bisexual.

I feel like making mixes, yay, so here's one for everyone's favorite three-minutes-on-screen pairing (heh)! I'm pretty sure these songs aren't in any particular order.

ninety6tears: jim w/ red bground (Default)
Book One

Fandom: Star Trek XI
Rating: R for language, violence and non-explicit sex (see other warnings.)
Characters/Pairings: Kirk, Uhura, McCoy, Scotty, mirror-Spock. Kirk/Uhura, some Scotty/OC.
Genres: drama/dystopian sci-fi/romance.
Summary: In events that parallel TOS' "Mirror, Mirror," four members of the Enterprise find themselves in a mirror universe but become stranded there. After covertly abandoning the Imperial fleet they seek anonymous refuge on Earth, eventually settling in the fragile autonomy of a region populated by resistant Terrans and former slaves.
Warnings: Strong violence, many references/incidents of slavery and oppression, mentions of dubcon and attempted child rape, minor character death.
Word Count: ~61000
Note: This is in a way a rebooted AU of "Mirror, Mirror," and begins very in medias res; I assume that even in reboot fandom most are familiar with the premise of the mirror universe and that episode, but if you are not, Memory Alpha is your friend.

dog years

Rating/Warnings: M (Non-graphic violence, implications of psychologically abusive (past) relationships, several mentions of slavery and related abuse.)
Characters/Pairings: Gene/Alel, Jill/Scotty, Tom, McCoy
Summary: Placing trust in a handful of former imperial soldiers is hardly easy for a group of slave-bred Romulans on the Terran Empire's home world, even if the four humans may not be what they seem. It's hard enough to separate friend from foe among their own species, to confide in each other, to trust that they could be loved.

-Part Two-

Book Two [WiP]

Rating: R for language, violence and non-explicit sex (see other warnings.)
Characters/Pairings: Kirk, Uhura, Spock, Chapel, Sulu, Chekov, McCoy, Scotty, mirror-Kirk, mirror-Moreau, mirror-Spock. Kirk/Uhura, Scotty/OC, acknowledgments of a few other pairings.
Summary: After four of the ship's officers never returned from an away mission, Spock reluctantly assumed the role of captain on the Enterprise while mourning the absence of his closest companions. Jim Kirk is meanwhile becoming the Terran Empire's most wanted fugitive in a slowly transforming mirror universe. Both of their fates may be affected by the self-fulfilling prophecy of a man who has very little to lose.
Overall Warnings: Violence (including some torture), secondary character death. This has been a WIP for a long while so it will have some inconsistencies with STID (and obviously contains no spoilers for the second film).

Waaah, everyone is talking about Inception and how awesome it is and I still won't get to see it until tomorrow.

Just gonna throw in my agreement that Iron Man 2 was pretty awesome, yay yay. Pepper and Tony are still the cutest. Don Cheadle's Rhodey doesn't really resemble Terrence Howard's in looks or personality, but hell, it's Don Cheadle, and I liked his version of the character a bit better. I actually felt that he and Tony were really *buddies* in this one. Sara and Shep and I were the only people in the theater who giggled in delight at John Slattery's role.

So, TODAY. Is the one-year anniversary of Star Trek being released in theaters in the U.S., which means I have to

get sentimental and talk fangirl )

On a tangentially related note, my god, Only Good For Legends is finished and I feel like I'm saying goodbye at the end of a favorite TV show or something, not a fanfic. What am I going to do with myself? D :
ninety6tears: jim w/ red bground (Default)
Haha. I know.
I do eventually plan on writing something that would involve somewhat developing a mirror version of the reboot Kirk, and this mix sort of came out of where that's going, though in some ways I thought of this as a counterpart to the Jim Kirk mix I did way back, as it speculates on his younger days of running amok, stealin' and murderin' and generally being a pretty terrifying person, probably.

ninety6tears: jim w/ red bground (Default)
I totally sat down at the computer to look up a word. Thirty minutes later, LOL, fandom secrets and updating again. The highlight of my venture in distraction from coming up with a thesis is somebody pointing out that between the botany and generally being secretly badass, Neville Longbottom + Hikaru Sulu = the same person. I'd have a hard time sorting TOS Sulu, but reboot!Sulu is kind of unquestionably Gryffindor. Even though that parking brake thing almost earns him Hufflepuff. Sorry, Hufflepuff, you're not that fail.

Yeah, I'm not the only person who sorts pretty much every fandom by Potter houses...Right?

And a little voice tells me to go do something fucking useful. But here's a gorgeous picspam of the Australian Ballet.

And the word was "dilettante," which means pretty much what I thought it meant.
ninety6tears: jim w/ red bground (Default)
The lights are burned out in my room and it's going to drive me nuts all night. It's all fun and games until I start snacking on Excedrin. No, I didn't actually do that.

...[livejournal.com profile] trekreversebang! I don't know if this concept has been done for other fandoms, but it's a cool idea. Won't be signing up, but will definitely be stalking. I would recommend participation particularly because they have awesome mods. No, seriously. I am spoiled for big bang experiences for eternity because [livejournal.com profile] startrekbigbang was so on top of things. Probably a symptom of being part of one of the best fandoms ever, not that I'm biased or anything.

I'm so behind on my classes already it's not even funny. There was a week or so when I just didn't have my books yet so I was just mreh-ing through classes. Now I gotta catch up on the friggin' Iliad, among other things.

I'm repeating the same creative senior sem I took a year ago, which we can do as long as we pursue a different project, but it means I have to write another short story cycle and I've got nothing. I feel like the inventory of ideas I came in with as a freshman has all been exhausted. Unless I manage to turn what was formerly a novel idea into a series of short stories, which I am dangerously close to thinking is actually possible, but the ambiguity of said plot idea would be really frustrating to discuss with other people unless I get as completely awesome a group as I did last time; Unlikely. Also, I would have to approach the professor about the policies on expanding already completed work, etc., since I did write a short story involving the characters my sophomore year. Up until we actually start talking about what we're gonna, do, though, talking about the same Hemingway book again is so damn boring.

Title: Vulcans Don't Play Basketball
(3/3)
Characters/Pairings: Prominently Kirk/Uhura but very Spock/Kirk/Uhura. Appearances by McCoy and Chekov.
Rating: R
Summary: Maybe some day they'll have something in common, besides a first officer who seems sometimes like an impossible code to crack.
A/N: I should probably mention at this point that I'm working on a one-shot companion piece, which will follow some of the events of this fic from Jim's POV.
Cut lyrics are from "Pretty Things" by Rufus Wainwright.
Also, sorry this part took so long.
