"You can hear me breathing?"
Jul. 17th, 2010 03:02 amWaaah, everyone is talking about Inception and how awesome it is and I still won't get to see it until tomorrow.
A very random thing about the deleted scenes in Star Trek that I love: In the same-but-different sequence when Jim and Gaila are interrupted by Uhura, Kirk sneaks in this not-quite-gloating "Gaila loves me" while Uhura is snapping "Get out!" repeatedly. (I'm pretty sure in the theatrical he's just saying "Later, Gaila.") Something about that is so completely adorable. On top of how that version of the scene has me a little more convinced that Uhura and Gaila are/were actually friends and that all Nyota's doing is being kind of protective because most of what she knows about Jim doesn't look good, not to mention the slightly more casual Kirk-Uhura dynamic it has, and I just want to squish the whole scene into my arms.
From what I listened to of the book of the film, that was actually one of the only parts I liked, because it has Nyota warning Gaila in Orion of Jim's *reputation*. And Gaila being all *I can take care of myself*. And Jim being all *I can understand Orion and I'm standing right here*.
Of course it's also the part where Jim is being a jerk and setting up Gaila to play with her feelings and use her to beat the Kobayashi Maru, buuut aside from the asshole part of getting her to open the message, I do kind of like how he evades telling her he loves her back so that he isn't expressing (seemingly?) fake affection to add insult to injury, and the extended scene makes me much more convinced he's avoiding being insincere. (He meticulously distracts her from the fact that he isn't telling her anything by subtly implying the note is something that it's not.) Which is the type of kindness that isn't as kind when it's doled out with premeditated injury, but still. He could have sugar-coated the message with something more affectionate but instead it's an "I'm sorry" that means he's not going to shy away from the fact that it was a dick move.

Date: 2010-07-21 06:57 pm (UTC)hee, I liked that deleted scene too! and yeah he was an idiot to Gaila, but like you said, at least he didn't try to sugar-coat it, which makes him sincere in his jerk-iness (is that even a word?).
random: I swear in the next couple years I'm going to short-circuit out of utter movie glee. Thor, and Captain America, and Sherlock Holmes 2, and Harry Potter, and Breaking Dawn (yes I do like the films, 'cause like in the books, I'm good at ignoring Edward and Bella and focusing on the others :P), and the next Batman, and the Avengers, and more Pirates of the Caribbean, and Star Trek 2. *jumps up and down in excitement*
