Sad about:

1. TxtLJ is gone!? Nooooo!
Okay, it definitely isn't something I need, especially since I don't have nice package for texting costs, but still. It was nice to be able to receive comments while I'm out shopping and stuff.

2. After putting it off forever, I finally watched the final Tennant episodes of Doctor Who. And :( quick comments with spoilers )

HAPPY ABOUT:

1. I'm going to be celebrating Halloween in St. Louis with my frieeends. I'm not sure what the specific plans are, but I'm going to be wearing this, which is kind of hilarious. I waited till graduating college to start wearing the hoochy costumes, this is ass-backwards.
Yeah, the whip is included.

2. Pulp lyrics. Approximately every 1-2 years I get obsessed with the song "Like A Friend" for a while.

3. Stoneridge Creamery Ice Cream. Seriously, I am talking about an ice cream company in my LJ because it's that awesome. They make some of the best store-bought ice cream I have ever had and I had already had my mind made up about this before I noticed that it's only about two to three dollars a container, and apparently was originally distributed only at value stores. Their vanilla has the bean flecks in it and the fudge ribbons are actually liquidy and seriously can you tell that I'm excited about this ice cream.

4. I WON THIS GOLDEN CYLON GODDAMN.

[livejournal.com profile] no_takebacks had an "Oscar Week" and my pilots BB fic got nom'd and actually won. I've never gotten an award for writing fic before. *cries* YOU LIKE ME, YOU REALLY LIKE ME.

I don't want this to be one of those bashing-a-film-that-everybody-thinks-is-great posts. Except. I keep hearing all these reactions to Curious Case of Benjamin Button like they were so moved by the message and all, and I saw it a couple days ago and feel completely unaffected by it. It was very nicely filmed and it managed to keep me pretty entertained without feeling the length of it, which is good, but I feel like it barely skimmed the surface of everything it could have said. The love story was unremarkable and was probably what detracted it from making any real statement with its premise. And for the first time ever I was actually annoyed with a performance from Cate Blanchett.

In other news. Eleven: don't click if you don't want to see the casting choice. )

OTPs

So, I sorta got tagged, forever ago, to do that Top 7 OTPs meme. I figured, now that I'm finally doing it, that this would be a good post in which to address a question that many a fandom member must ask themselves from time to time:

Just what, exactly, does it mean when I say I "ship"?

Some dictionary of fandom terminology, or as Wikipedia says, would explain, "People involved in shipping (or shippers) assert that the relationship does exist, will exist, or simply that they would like it to exist." This doesn't encompass, though, the popularity of unrequited ships, or ships that we not only accept as absurdly unlikely but sort of prefer that way. My boyfriend, on one of the rare occasions that I went into fangirl-talk around him, described two BSG characters as already having, without acting on, the kind of relationship we would like them to have, and that they were therefore "unshippable."

And I said, "NO," because my little shipping heart hardly prioritizes the actual sexual together-ness of the ship. So maybe I'm not a very good shipper in the conventional sense, because most of the time I enjoy the angst and the agony more than I could ever enjoy A and B being married-with-children without the loose ends. When I say that I ship somebody, I don't think it means I want A and B to be in a relationship as much as it means that I want to be convinced and reminded of A and B's love for one another in continuously interesting, captivating and touching ways.

Considering this, it's not surprising that if I look at my top seven OTPs I find a trend of difficulty, taboo, or impossibility. Only a couple of these are arguably a successful pairing. (WaRnInG: spoilers ahead for lots of stuff.)

Judging from a certain recent evening I came slogging home from a seven-hour work shift to predictably find Sara watching Doctor Who and immediately yelled, "I hate this show! I've been wanting to watch it all day!", my usual new fandom nag that is my sister didn't have to try very hard to get me to watch it. My love/hate relationship with the Who is only emphasized by something which may be a reason for which I have on some subconscious level previously told myself I would probably never watch the new series: Simply by being immersed in the internet I'd managed to figure out I'd probably ship the hell out of Doctor/Rose and, having a general idea of how all the fangirls were devastated by the season two finale, maybe felt a little bit like getting into this show would be downright sadistic of me. All I can say is thank god for David Tennant and the fact that the show doesn't take itself too seriously, because this character has some hella-angst baggage going on and somehow every episode still manages to be a little silly and make you laugh your ass off without ignoring all the past tragedies its main character has to constantly reckon with.

One interesting thing that Sara said to me when I started watching this show is that the Doctor and Rose have the potential to make me question everything I've ever held against Stephenie Meyer over Edward and Bella. I swear I could write a whole meta post comparing the two, because I've actually put a ridiculous amount of thought into how the situations are slightly but significantly different. And maybe I will.

Seeing as I'm only at the beginning of season three, I'm in a kind of pseudo-spoiler-lockdown concerning Doctor Who. There aren't exactly an assload of big reveals you wouldn't want spoiled in this kind of show, but since I went in knowing most of the major stuff that would transpire in the first couple seasons it would be nice to be surprised by something. And some of the stuff I don't know about yet probably seems like ancient history to those who've kept up with torrents (or, um, are British) so it's not like people are being sensitive to spoiling others, and they just finished S4 so the fandom is pretty bubbly right now. So I'm just being. . .eh. . .cautious. Not very active on LJ at the moment for various reasons, anyway.

Will possibly post more detailed reactions to specific episodes later. I don't even know how many Whovians are watching my journal, probably not many.
