"Mirror, Mirror" was the episode of Star Trek: TOS to introduce the barbaric/dystopian parallel universe which would make a number of appearances in different Star Trek series over time. Captain Kirk and three other crew members end up in the universe as a result of an ion storm that makes the transporter beam swap them with their counterparts in the mirror universe. What they discover is a world that would seem to be a carbon copy of their own and all the people in it, if it weren't one in which the Terran Empire of Earth uses its fleet as an iron fist to maintain a threatening rather than peacekeeping presence throughout explored space.

While keeping a covert charade as the other version of James T. Kirk, Jim finds himself in the company of Marlena Moreau, a high-ranking science officer who apparently serves as a kind of courtesan in the role of "the captain's woman," but who we learn is not only an intimate companion but a woman willing to get her hands dirty in order to protect Kirk against potential assassins. We never get to see Moreau interact with her true captain but the implication is that their relationship is an unsteady one. Under a tough and cunning exterior, the headstrong Marlena shows that she is capable of softer wisdom and perhaps understands that the violence of the fleet is based almost entirely on a fear of the unknown; it's possible she understands, loves, and despises Kirk for this in equal measures, and it's hard to say how long their passion could have ever survived in such a brutal backstabbing world.

SADLY THERE ISN'T. I may have to try to remedy that (though the relationship will factor into the appearances of both characters in my mirror verse series that's getting obnoxiously epic, it's never the main focus or anything, but thinking through all that head-canon made me start to ship it pretty hard).

My memories of this episode are pretty vague, though I remember being a little uncomfortable with the whole 'captain's woman' thing- but with your summary and song choices you've made it sort of empowering and I love that- it's exactly how I would hope to see it if the reboot did the mirror universe.
