ninety6tearsI keep meaning do another SPN flail post and then devoting my time to watching more of it instead.
Fresh Blood. The beginning with the poor woman turned into a vampire was pretty intense. It was interesting they started you with Dean taking her head off because Dean is the one who does the brutal stuff while Sam stands by looking uneasy...and then finished with Sam taking off Gordon's head. I'm so happy he's gone.
And the ending? When Dean was looking under the hood and then looking over at Sam I went, "Oh my God he's going to tell him how to look after the car, isn't he?" And then he did, and I felt weepy inside.
A Very Supernatural Christmas. Perfect example of how you can be laughing your ass off but actually be pretty scared for the characters at the same time.
So I've realized lately I have this thing? Where if in a movie or whatever you have two people - and two people only - celebrating Christmas with each other, whether it's a cute elderly couple or the rock star and his manager in Love, Actually being like "Let's get pissed and watch porn!"...I am guaranteed to think that it is the most adorable thing in the world. Nothing says "Merry Christmas" like fraud-funded porn mags and beer. YES.
Dream a Little Dream of Me. I loved this one. Lots of Bobby and bringing out a more serious side with him, and amazing acting from Jensen (One critic put it well: "Ackles gives two of his best performances in the history of the show. At the same time."). His daddy issues have daddy issues.
Mystery Spot. I had actually seen a lot of this episode from when my sister was marathoning SPN and had been continuously wondering when the hell we were going to get to the hilarious Groundhog Day episode. It's sooo gooood, and I'm so glad it's in the season when Dean's on the hook for a year, because of course it is. Watching Sam's slow descent from terrified and overwhelmed to totally worn down by the whole joke just makes you wanna give him a hug. But the BEST THING about this episode is the emphasis on all the mundane/annoying sides of Dean that come through multiplied by a hundred days of him saying the same damn things over and over again, and you can't help but wonder if in the long run Sam may have been grateful to get those hundred extra mornings of Dean's stupid fascination with the Pig 'n' a Poke even while he felt like throwing himself off a cliff after the fiftieth Tuesday.
(CUT IT OUT, SAM. YOU THINK YOU'RE BEING FUNNY BUT YOU'RE BEING REALLY REALLY CHILDISH. SAM WINCHESTER WEARS MAKE-UP. SAM WINCHESTER CRIES HIS WAY THROUGH SEX. SAM WINCHESTER KEEPS A RULER BY HIS BED AND EVERY MORNING WHEN HE WAKES UP OKAY ENOUGH.)
Anyway, I never said anything about "Tall Tales," but I love the trickster guy (HE'S AN ANGEL, ISN'T HE? AM I RIGHT?) and wanted to fist-pump when he was behind it all and I just thought the whole episode was a great way to show us how this whole thing with Dean is being handled (or not so much being handled...at all) by Sam and it's probably my favorite Sam-centric episode they've ever done.
Jus In Bello. Badass, badass.
No Rest For The Wicked. Bon Jovi rocks on occasion. Laughing and crying forever.
For one thing, thank you, production team, for keeping the dogs invisible even when Dean started seeing them. That first moment when he actually saw one and just said, "Hellhound," it was creepy enough. And how awesome was Bobby in this episode with his "You're almost hell's bitch, so you can see the other bitches."
And, um, Dean dies and goes to hell. I wish I could say I saw it coming even as it's the perfect opposite of a cop-out, but I totally didn't. This is one example of a reason to actually be partly grateful for the writer's strike, because I honestly wouldn't have preferred Sam's whole going-dark-side plot to be in this season at all, it just would've been too much, and not being able to fit that in apparently contributed to their decision to throw Dean into the pit. Hehehh.
Lazarus Rising. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Just. Everything about the beginning is gorgeous. It's resurrection, but it's gritty and frightening and it's an entire season concerning the possibility of the apocalypse opening with this sense of emptiness and aloneness. It could feel like a cop-out but it's this very rugged way of being pulled out of death: Dean wakes up with nothing but dirty civy clothes and a lighter in his pocket, and his voice is all screwed up and he's thirsty as hell and scared and confused, and what is that noise, and what fucking year is it. And he's alone. (Except for noob!Cas, LOL)
And it takes its TIME so beautifully. The second time I watched the ep I realized it's like seven minutes before Dean's even in the payphone. And of course I friggin' love Bobby's "Call me again and I'll kill you," and his reunion with Dean had me wanting to cry.
AND OH, when Bobby didn't even know where Sam was, I was totally thinking I was in for some two or three episodes of drawing out some epic dramatic irony of Dean looking for Sam who has no idea he's busted out, and I honestly don't know if I was disappointed or relieved that they found him within minutes, but it felt pretty fitting that Dean can find the kid in the drop of a hat.
Let's all take a minute to reflect on Ruby's poker face being a little too good.
Oh, and the title card for season 4 is awesomesauce.
In The Beginning. BABY!MARY AND JOHN are so awesome and perfectly cast. Talk about en episode that had the potential to be heartwarming and kind of was, maybe a little bit, but ended up totally devastating. Poor Mary, it's futile, your family is just cursed. What she did was kiiinda stupid, I know don't know if she thought Azazel was gonna drop by to mow their lawn or something, but when you see the whole story she was all alone and almost had no choice and it's so, so sad.
This was also the beginning of kinda-nice Castiel, what with him *gravely patting Dean on the shoulder* and all.
On The Head of a Pin. Ffffff, okay, I think this is my favorite. I didn't even know what to do with myself after I saw this episode. The totally awesome teaser with sad Cas and the dead angel, and Alastair is seriously one of the seediest, creepiest, funniest, most badass villains I have ever seen in anything, and he still manages to be this while he's being TORTURED. And still-sad Cas telling Dean he'd give anything to not have to ask him to do it, and Anna showing up to finish Uriel, and Cas going back to the hospital and just sitting with Dean.
It's a Terrible Life. "I am DYING to check this out right now." "Right?" And LOL, Dean eating salads is frightening. I can't help loving this vaguely Brian Kinney asshole!Dean.
Lucifer Rising. Oh, shucks. Of course I'm going to say Castiel is epic win in this episode. I just love how throughout this entire season the relationship between him and Dean is something that starts out trying to be "I AM YOUR HOLY OVERSEER AND MENTOR MM-HMM" but all that gets kicked over because it's Dean Winchester and Cas ends up learning a couple things from him and getting in trouble because of Dean. And they're not quite buddies, but Dean can tell how he ticks and when he thinks something's not right. He takes him on human terms and is able to call him on his b.s. and it's awesome.
The Sam & Dean stuff is so hurty I felt like I needed a tub of ice cream.
Alright, general thoughts:
-I never once had my mind made up about Ruby, I was all over the place with her. Sometimes I trusted and liked her, sometimes I didn't and loved to hate her, sometimes I was just like "Nice belt buckle" or "Sam/Ruby is pretty kinky," sometimes I was sick of wondering about her to the point that I just blamed Sam for everything and didn't care anymore. And speaking of Sam, ugh, obviously you're supposed to get REALLY mad at him this season, but ugh, UNGH. I think the parts that really had me going "Oh, I am so done with you, man" were when he had to keep calling Dean WEAK, cause MAGIC IS MIGHT and all that, right. You know, I'm a bit more of a Dean girl and I try not to woobify him and God knows it would be way too much and a little out of character for Dean to pull out the "I'VE BEEN TO HELL" card, but DUDE. DEAN SPENT THIRTY YEARS IN HELL BEFORE HE CRACKED. YOU CAN'T LAST TWO WEEKS WITHOUT A FIX, AND HE'S THE WEAK ONE? FUCK YOU, SAM. I still love you, especially in your quick turnover into puppy remorse. But you are so in the doghouse right now I can't even.
-Oh, oh, I liked Bela. I actually kinda really did. There were some general problems with the writing when she showed up, like it would have been nice for her to seem able to actually outsmart the Winchesters rather than just catch them on their stupid days, but she was ruthless and screwed up and then in the end everything made SO much sense (not wanting to be in anyone's debt, always needing to be in control), and I just thought, what an awesome character.
-...I just realized I've accidentally skipped an episode ("Family Remains"). Oops.
-Anna and Castiel are ~fascinating~. Anna and Dean are very pretty. Is this an OT3 brewing? Hmm.
-Speaking of shipping, I think in general I'm in the "Not passionately sold on anything, but I'd read pretty much read anything" stage. I don't need recs, I need LISTS of recs.
BTW, I've totally gotten like four episodes into the next season since I started writing this post XD But I will talk about that later.
