Delicious needs to stop changing things. Just when I think "OK, I miss the way it used to be but I guess I can get used to this" something else goes wonky. Ever since they added the feature so that you can have spaces in your tags, tags that weren't filled out with commas are all smushed in as one tag (the tags are still searchable somehow, I think, but it still bugs me). And while I'd formerly had issues with bookmarks refusing to be deleted, I had the much worse horror of being unable to find a link that I swear I had bookmarked, which is going to make me lose sleep wondering how many of my links have disappeared.
There's no way I'll be able to remember much of everything I had to say about Lost buuut here are some random disorganized and overlong thoughts about s3 and 4...
-Let's talk about Juliet and how terrible her life is. I think one of the most crushing scenes that has happened in this entire show so far is that whole thing where she finally realizes that Ben isn't going to let her go home. Later on she gets to see that her sister is really okay (which to me somehow feels too good to be true) but the whole thing is still really gutting.
-I would actually almost ship Jack/Juliet, maybe? if there seemed to be more potential there because I think the politics of their relationship are a lot less complicated/bullshit than Jack and Kate's, like even though I can't think whether she has done so I feel like Juliet would actually be all "WTF man" if Jack did something she thought was really stupid. If I think really hard about it I'd probably think that Juliet and Sayid should just hook up, though. Hah, do I like Juliet? It seems I must.
-Though speaking of Juliet, the whole plot with her being a mole was really awesome and really frustrating at the same time. Okay, so she went ahead and told Jack what she was doing for Ben. Cool. But they made it really anti-climactic smugness fodder for Jack in a way that was just asking us to be annoyed with him. LOL, "Anything you wanna say to me you can say in front of her!" as if it's totally reasonable for them to trust a former member of a group who have proven that they always believe that they are right and are therefore capable of doing pretty much anything to fuck people over. But like whatever, she's a pretty lady and no one else gets to question her shit even without any explanation. He probably does have reasons to trust her but none of them are presented to us (Are we supposed to believe she told Jack that Ben was bribing her with the possibility of letting her go home? Or did she never even explain why she changed her mind about wanting him to die?) and definitely not presented to the characters.
-Add to that Jack acting like saving somebody's life is the worst thing you could ever ask of him even when every second of refusing to do so is putting someone else's life in danger (it's possible he was never going to not do it, but I think it takes a special breed of whatever screwed-up narcissism is going on in his head for his very first reaction to this situation to be "I'm so angry you've found a way to make me do something I don't want to do") - Jack is very lucky he's a fictional character and therefore his decision paid off to get Sawyer and Kate to safety in a way that we're supposed to cheer for even though his refusal to admit he wasn't in control of the situation put them all in danger. And actually, Jack, I don't think lives are dispensable for the sake of getting people off the island, you stupid jackass, assuming even that you were concerned that the island seemed like the less safe place and it wasn't just about how your ego makes you unable to yield to the fact that life isn't fair when other people have guns. It really isn't this interesting odd contradictory thing for a doctor to be in love with a murderer when it's a doctor who's like Jack. He's not a bad guy, he's not a hero, he's just...a stupid guy.
ADMITTEDLY, the part when Jack first tells Kate he loves her was pretty sweet. But at the same time it effectively lampshaded that he's only capable of being a cool guy when someone he very personally cares about is involved (as much as it was this elusive comment with some context I can't remember - something to do with him being nice to Sawyer?). That trope of "X has many bad qualities, but we care because X loves Y" only works for me when X is presented as sort of an anti-hero and it's more that we're invested in the sentiment than in the character.
-Kate. There are so many things I love that they do with Kate and so many things I hate. First of all, I love that they actually made her a cold hard criminal. They make her somebody who has very deliberately killed somebody, and even though it wasn't a good person, she admits herself that it wasn't so much because she wanted to protect her mother but because she just plain wanted this guy to be dead. I like this a lot because it doesn't seem like something they would often do with a character like her (especially not a female character) and all the tension about her being sort of one of the shady members of the crew wouldn't really add up if we felt like we could root for her committing the types of crimes she's done.
What I don't like is how her flashback episodes jump kind of incongruously from this idea that she's a ruthless refugee who can't let herself end up in jail to this ruthless refugee who...can't settle down with a man? And these two traits are actually supposed to be related? And the marshal supposedly is able to know this about her? What? It's an interesting idea, okay, but it needed more meat to it; there needed to be some idea that her nature not only made her ethically fickle but emotionally fickle long before they started bringing it up with Sawyer. There was plenty of conflict with Sawyer without that anyway, what with her thinking that the part of her that's attracted to him is the criminal part of her and all that.
-As for all that drama, I couldn't care less that Kate won't lock her panties on for either man when she hasn't made either of them any promises. But what makes me roll my eyes at her is when she gets suuuuuper defensive with Sawyer for doing nothing but (usually calmly and fairly) acknowledging the way that she is. Like, come on, let him have some perfectly sane skepticism instead of making it about how you feel, Freckles.
But I'm a tad bit ashamed to say I do really really adore Kate/Sawyer. I like Kate/Sawyer way more than I like Kate, and I'm not usually that kind of annoying-ass shipper. They're just damn cute, when you wouldn't expect a pairing like that to be cute. Could just be because Sawyer is possibly my favorite favorite. Yes, he is a real douche sometimes, especially in season one, but he knows he's a douche, and he does some pretty fucking heroic things and he values the lives of almost everyone around him way more than he cares about himself. He's funny as hell, he gets to this point where he just recognizes and gets protective of the most vulnerable person in any situation, he reads everything he can get his hands on, I just goddamn love the guy.
-Is it just me or does Sayid get snarkier every season? Not to project my opinions on one of my favorite characters or anything, but I'm pretty sure he isn't Jack's biggest fan (like of course he'd consider Jack a friend, but in a way so would Sawyer), only he doesn't really want to be the leader so he usually just sits there and has a much better plan and only submits it when asked for it. Which is sad because he is brilliant at thinking tactically, but I guess they wouldn't have as much of a conflict-ridden story to tell if Sayid was always in charge. No, I don't favor this character at all, what are you talking about.
-Charlie :'(
I mean OMFG CHARLIE. When he was making the list of his "greatest hits," that made it one of the best episodes ever. When he said goodbye to Aaron...and the baby was like squeezing at his face...and he told him "I love you"...and then he kissed Claire...*BAWLING*
-Desmond is one of the most weirdly adorable characters ever. He seems condemned to be running around yelling things that will make no sense to other people, usually in a state of extreme stress and unkempt hair/clothing. And he has a super-rich girlfriend who is going to find his skinny ass. Aw, Penny. I don't even know why Desmond/Penny manages to be one of the more poignant relationships in the show, but it is. When I was catching up through the eps I'd already seen with my sister and we got to the part when Des is climbing up to get the parachuter out of the tree and it's spliced with that moment when he first meets Penny...watching it a second time, even though I knew it wasn't Penny, it made me all emotional all over again. And of course "The Constant" is their big lovely episode.
-TRICIA TANAKA IS DEAD. Favorite Hurley episode forever. It's amazing how Sawyer shows up to be all "Where's my stuff?" and gets a hug from Jin (Jin/Sawyer is my crack!ship OTP, BTW) and then gets lured into the insanity with old beer and pretty much everything from there is hilarious. "It's work man!" "Those pants don't make you look fat."
It's totally the "This is what the kids end up doing when Jack isn't around" episode, LOL.
-THE BRIG was such a total "Fuck yes" episode. I can't decide whether what Locke did was totally fucked up - let's face it, it kind of was - but I was flipping my shit when his father turned out to be THE Sawyer. There's been so much build-up about that issue and in the ep when Sawyer shoots the shrimp stand guy you almost think they're going to make it into this pitying thing, like maybe the real Sawyer isn't much worse than Sawyer himself, he didn't mean to actually hurt anybody's family or he's changed, etc. It's inescapable that he would function as kind of a foil character to James because he basically sets himself up to be exactly that, so the fact that they went waaaay in the other direction and made the guy who conned Sawyer's mother a totally unrepentant asshole? This felt right to me. I wasn't exactly happy that Sawyer killed him? But I thought it was brilliant because I really didn't expect them to do that, and then he totally had a freak-out and threw up over it and later on Kate could tell something was up and that was good, and then Sawyer shot Friendly and that was interesting...but then they just kind of dropped it and didn't show how he really deals with it or gets past it, so I'm wondering if any of that is gonna come up again. *shrug*
-THIS POST HAS BEEN SITTING ON MY BROWSER FOR TOO LONG. The season finales of this show seem to always be amazing, but for season three it was like DAMN. Hurley saving everybody's ass with the Dharma van and everything.
And I did also like S4 but it felt like it went by really fast and I have less to say about it. I like Daniel, I like Charlotte, I LOVE the pilot guy, whatever his name is, the one who was supposed to be flying the plane the day it crashed. I think I actually loathe Miles more than any other character who has ever been on this show, but it's not somebody you're supposed to love, and Sawyer threatening to rip him a new one when he's being creepy with Claire was the best.
-Oh, and I love how Sun becomes kind of a cold BAMF in later episodes, like when she demands that money from her dad acknowledging that she's always known What He Does. BLAGH, I think I'm done.
My New Year's Eve was fiiine. We went down to Carbondale to see my brother's 70s rock tribute band...He changes up his bands/genres all the time but he always has the same kickass drummer and of course he's not a shabby bass player so it's always a good time. I was a leetle disappointed they didn't play "Cracked Actor" after he said they were learning it but they hit a couple of my favorite Stones tunes so I cannot complain. The irrefutable highlight of the evening was that my brother's girl (who is now his BETROTHED :D) got my dad to dance with her. There were plenty of people over fifty, if not sixty, getting down in this bar. Cardondale isn't a rowdy town because of the school; SIU is a party school because of the town.

Date: 2012-01-02 07:31 pm (UTC)There isn't a show around that excites me the way Lost did, even when Lost was at its most flawed. Like you, I never saw Jack as a hero in the way seemed to want viewers to believe him to be. While I thought Kate and Sawyer had much more chemistry than Kate and Jack, in the final analysis, I don't think she really belonged with either of them.

Date: 2012-01-03 08:33 pm (UTC)juliet. i was weird about juliet when i first saw her character. she seems like a two-faced bitch (and then it turned out she was two-faced... and a bitch) but i ended up liking her character just because of the sadness in her story. she just wants to go home, ben :'(
jack is a buttface. i used to like him but then he turned into an obnoxious fooool. he's just so WRONG AGH. and yet, he sometimes has these moments which seem really sincere. i still have a soft spot for the idiot.
so the mixture of jack/juliet is like a pairing of assholes who i kind of like so i guess it's appropriate hmm
BUT i completely support kate/sawyer. sawyer is one of - no, he is the best character in lost, and when he fell for kate and they were together in the cages and they had a fight and stuff and he was trying to protect her and she was all like no wth and omg omg omg ;-; it's just the best pairing there! (except for shannon/sayid aghhhh even though she was such a bitch but she was so nice with sayid.) you described sawyer so perfectly. you're bang on. that's exactly why i think he's the best character in lost.
sayid has his nice moments, but he really turns into such a bitch! xD i guess because he's had a real hard time of it. i mean, you can't expect someone who worked against the americans all their life to happily live amongst them. but i think the real reason is because of shannon (sob).
CHAAAAARLIE
i'm just not prepared to talk about him i'm sorry :'(
jin/sawyer. i have never thought about this before. IT'S AWESOME ♥
i'm going to go look up fics for it right now
congratulations to your brother! :) i don't think enough people get married anymore. it's good to hear.
ok, fandom i give you... can i give you three? otherwise, just pick on from this list:
heroes
star trek
harry potter

Date: 2012-01-05 06:19 am (UTC)Yeah, I'm pretty sure the best there ever will be of the Kate/Sawyer relationship is all that stuff when they were in the cages...When that guy beat the crap out of Sawyer it was INTENSE, like you could tell that if Kate wasn't in the cage she would have literally been trying to put herself between the two, and UGH. She obviously loves him so much, it's all so fucked up.
LOL, if you actually find some Jin/Sawyer I will be impressed...but I just loved some of their interaction circa late S1/early S2. Jin is a fun character to watch in how he gets a feel for the personalities of everyone around him even when he can't understand them, and there are moments where he seems to get that Sawyer really isn't a nice guy, but they're still kinda chummy.
The meme! :D (I'll do two out of three just because my memory of Heroes is pretty fuzzy.)
STAR TREK
Favorite character: Kirk if it's who I'm writing but Spock just in general
Least Favorite character: ...Ayel?
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Kirk/Spock, Kirk/Uhura, Kirk/Spock/Uhura, Chapel/McCoy, Chekov/Sulu
Character I find most attractive: (This is ridiculously hard.) Um, Uhura (in both universes in fact) closely followed by either Spock and then TOS!Scotty
Character I would marry: Bones
Character I would be best friends with: Scotty
a random thought: My sister and I recently decided that if it were possible for Kirk and Spock to have a son, he would end up basically being Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park.
An unpopular opinion: For some reason I only want to see Spock sexualized in fanfic and I think that it's lazy that they had to develop him that way in the movie.
my canon OTP: Don't have one...There are a couple cute pairings in VOY and DS9 but I've never been much into canon shipping with Trek.
Non-canon OTP: This is like impossible to choose, but I'm gonna go with K/U
most badass character: They're all pretty badass in different ways...but I'm gonna go with Spock.
pairing I am not a fan of: Scotty/Uhura *shrug*
character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): I mean, if I have to, Spock all the way
favourite friendship: Kirk and Spock, not even a debate
character I want to adopt or be adopted by: Adopt Keenser, be adopted by Uhura
HARRY POTTER
Favorite character: This is really tough...I have a soft spot for most of the Weasleys and pretty much all the Marauder era characters. I'm gonna go with George W. if I can only pick one.
Least Favorite character: Umbridge or...as much as I feel bad saying it, Hagrid
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Remus/Sirius, Ginny/Neville, James/Lily, Harry/Hermione, Ron/Hermione. Snape/Lily gets runner-up, in the unrequited sense
Character I find most attractive: Sirius
Character I would marry: Remus
Character I would be best friends with: Remus again
a random thought: I need to read so much more fic for this fandom...
An unpopular opinion: I don't think the kiddie names in the epilogue are all that bad.
my canon OTP: Ron/Hermione
Non-canon OTP: Remus/Sirius
most badass character: Neville, but Harry's up there for me
pairing I am not a fan of: Even though I put it as one I like, I'm tempted to say Harry/Hermione because the whininess of some of the shippers kind of ruined the fun of it for me.
character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): none
favourite friendship: I can't pick between Harry's friendship with Ron and his friendship with Hermione.
character I want to adopt or be adopted by: Adopt Dumbledore, be adopted by James
GODDAMN SO I JUST WROTE OUT AN EPICALLY LONG COMMENT AND LJ ATE IT
Date: 2012-01-04 02:13 am (UTC)ohmygod, Juliet. I didn't love her immediately, but she grew on me so hard. And even though I didn't like her yet when that scene happened where it became clear Ben just WAS NOT gonna let her leave, I was shocked at how much I felt for her.
He probably does have reasons to trust her but none of them are presented to us...and definitely not presented to the characters.
HEEEEEE congratulations my dear, you are ~*officially*~ a Lost fan, cause I swear the fact that these characters simply REFUSE to just COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER is(/was) the bane of our collective existence.
Kate, you polarizing-ass woman. It's not even HER, it's the way she's written, they literally rocket back and forth from writing her in ways I love and ways that piss me off (omg though, as much as I did NOT watch Lost for the shipping, I cannot deny Kate/Sawyer is my heart.) And yeah, he's such an awesome character. His arc is just...honestly amazing. ♥_________♥
ohgod Sayid (totally MY favourite favourite). Charliiiiiiie. DESMOND (AND PENNEH, and The Constant!) Sun! HURLEY. and oh holy fuck, The Brig
I wasn't exactly happy that Sawyer killed him? But I thought it was brilliant because I really didn't expect them to do that
YEAH, MAN. That episode was SO deliciously mindfucky. It was years ago and I still remember watching that shit live, chewing on my lip and smacking my brother in the arm repeatedly, just trying to stop myself from screaming at my screen
"OMG WTF OMGGGGGGG!!!!" and suchI like all 4 of Team Freighter, tbh. Even Miles. I agree he's not really meant to be loved, but I'm kind of stupidly fond of him because I find him hilarious. Maybe I'm just weird or perhaps he'll grow on you (and eeee, Frank Lapidus is the pilot, but I must admit I'll always look at his face and think "BEST IN TEXAS!")
I'm happy you had a tasty New Year's and all that really sounds awesome, I just missing being able to talk about Lost. =) (while we're at it, why don't you do up that fandom for this meme? And if'n you don't mind, I'd reeeeeally like to hear your thoughts on both Locke and Benjamin Linus at this juncture. :D)
AWW FUCK LJ
Date: 2012-01-05 07:48 am (UTC)I have to admit Miles can be pretty funny. I wouldn't quite guarantee that he can't grow on me.
And agh, I totally forgot to talk about how much I loved the episode with Ben's backstory. He was a pretty cool baddie up until that point but something about that episode left me with the impression that he's kind of perpetually stuck in the embittered child mindset (like a lot of his mannerisms feel weirdly immature to me) but at the same time very threatening and intelligent...His crush on Juliet is a little bit oddly funny - and a whole lot creepy D: but I remember LOLing when he brought her to that guy's body and gave her the "I OWN YOU" speech and then was like, "Take as much time as you need." At the point I'm at I feel like I have no clue whatsoever what they're going to do with this character...And holy shit, the way that Alex died was pretty fucked up and sad.
LOCKE. Is totally that character that is covertly a favorite of mine because I love him but don't end up talking about him that much. Probably because I have no clue where his story is headed. The whole Jacob thing is actually pretty creepy to me, and IDEK what's going on but I feel like there's going to be something ultimately tragic but awesome about him (though his life thus far has already been very tragic and awesome, I guess).
Oh, THE MEME.
LOST
Favorite character: Sawyer
Least Favorite character: Jack
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Kate/Sawyer, Shannon/Boone, Shannon/Sayid, Jin/Sun, Desmond/Penny (All canon and het, that's...unusual)
Character I find most attractive: Boone
Character I would marry: SAYID
Character I would be best friends with: Hurley
a random thought: Is there ever going to be a Bernard/Rose flashback episode? They're so damn cute.
my canon OTP: Kate/Sawyer? Though for a pairing with such short-lived relevance, I was very into Boone/Shannon.
Non-canon OTP: Jin/Sawyer
most badass character: Sayid
pairing I am not a fan of: Jack/Kate...There really aren't any pairings I absolutely despise but even if I liked Jack I doubt I would care that much about them cause it feels a little forced to me
favourite friendship: Charlie and Hurley.
character I want to adopt or be adopted by: adopt Vincent, be adopted by Locke (just because he feels like such a tough-love grandpa to me)
AND IF YOU LOSE YOUR WOMAN, PLEEEASE DON'T FOOL WITH MINE
Date: 2012-01-05 11:20 pm (UTC)Eeeeeeee, the Man Behind the Curtain? Where we find out Ben KILLED HIS DAD (and countless other people) and like all that shit happened with the cabin and Locke and the mass grave an' stuff? XDDD yeahhhh. One of the best hours of the whole show, imo. Bah I wanna watch it agaiiiinnn, I have since it ended, partially cause I love it (even when it's frustrating) and partially just to see the evolution of Ben's character with the end point in mind - from like "Henry Gale" to this total unknown motherfucker ("you guys got any milk?" BRAIN ASPLODE all across the internet) to one of Them to the LEADER to wait he's dying to kind of at the Losties' mercy to all that shit with Alex to blowing up the freighter and MOVING THE ISLAND......to other stuff. :D ohman I love this show. anyway....yeahhh he can be strangely childish. For an ice-cold manipulative murdering badass, I mean. Maybe that's why along with the creepiness, there was something absurdly funny and almost a little bit cute about his deal with Juliet, like when he invited her over to talk about stuff but treated it like a date and made like a whole ham, it became kind of a meme in the fandom (Ben's made you a delicious ham! MUST BE WEDNESDAY) (HEE, it might have actually been - kay, remember he first introduced himself as Henry Gale? And then we found out it was a lie and he said his name was Ben but OBVIOUSLY we didn't know if we could trust him, so we all called him Benry for the LONGEST TIME. There was this adorable webcomic about him called Benry Knows Best and omg I gotta hunt it down now)
Aaaaaaaand as usual your feelings about Locke totally mirror my own, he totally is a tragic but awesome figure and EVERY TIME he's onscreen crazy awesome wtf-y shit happens and Terry O'Quinn is an epic awesome actor and him & Michael Emerson play off each other SO WELL and omg. ♥ (they both won Emmys for this show, as they should have, and I'm pretty sure each specifically namedropped the other in their speeches cause the writers realized how boss their chemistry was and put em together all the time to AWESOME results and they got really close in real life too and just general yaaaay all around) I CAN'T WAIT TIL YOU START SEASON 5, you're gonna see some serious shit
CHARLIE AND HURLEYYYYYYYYY
♥ it's guuuuy love between two guys!
Re: AND IF YOU LOSE YOUR WOMAN, PLEEEASE DON'T FOOL WITH MINE
Date: 2012-01-06 05:13 am (UTC)Gah, I love Terry O'Quinn and I loved the featurette that showed that he just decided to learn to throw knives because Locke would probably know how to throw knives. I thought that was about as awesome as the fact that Naveen apparently came up with the idea of Sayid and Shannon gettin' together. And he always called her Miss America! Aww.
