Okay, I always take a long time to wade through my "to read" bookmarks and this fic was posted quite a while back, but if you like the idea of Chris Pike/George Kirk and have actually not read If You Don't Start Drinking (I'm Gonna Leave) by [livejournal.com profile] robanybody, DO IT NOW.

"And I'm not stealing the Psi Upsilon mascot. That fucking weasel bit me the last time and I'm not getting that many hypos ever again."

Sometimes, when Chris is yelling at George, he feels like a cartoon character, all eyebrows and a wide open mouth and anger lines spiking up from his head; he feels like his mouth is going to unhinge from his jaw and swallow the world because that's how much George aggravates him. And then George will do something nice, like make him tea and keep everyone away from him all evening so he can study in peace or rub his head when Pike gets his usual tension headaches or stay up with him all night when Pike has insomnia because he knows how much Chris hates being up and alone in the middle of the night, and Chris will forget that he spends most of his time wanting to smother George.

"No weasel," George promises with a shark-like grin that makes Pike uncomfortable because he knows he's not going to like the answer that's coming up.

"Okay, if it's no uniform and no weasel, then what is it?"

"Vegas, baby." George holds his fist out for Pike to bump. "Am I a genius or what?"

Chris stares at his fist like he's confused by the concept of it. "What?"

George looks disappointed by his response. "Dude, we're going to Vegas. You're taking me to Vegas so we can get drunk and gamble and have a lot of drunken sex."

"With each other?" Pike asks in a horrified voice.

April sputters helplessly into his ale, laughing so hard that he almost chokes. "Oh, Christopher," he sighs once he's finally managed to get a hold of himself, "you truly are one of my most favorite people in this world."

At first I had to sort of put aside that I couldn't really see Pike as the kind of naive sidekick of George's dude clique, but once I got into the feel of his relationship with Kirk I actually thought it made a lot of sense, and by the end you definitely see how this Christopher could eventually become the Pike we know from the movie. This fic is just downright hilarious and sweet, and is one of those gems that actually works better because it doesn't feel very futuristic. Cause some things you can believe won't ever change, and maybe every fandom needs some form of fanfiction depicting Las Vegas shenanigans.

one-shot, rated R, read it here.
