So I don't know how this happened, because I'm a Spock girl all the way and have been trying to put together a Spock mix, and instead I whipped up a Kirk fanmix and am currently writing fic that's getting very Kirk-gen. As it turns out I might be wrong when I say that Jim is not one of my favorite characters; the jury's still out, but for the time being this seems to be contending with my BSG mix for my favorite fanmix I've ever done. Though I didn't set out to do it this way, it came out less starship-captain and more hard-luck-country-kid-destined-to-be-starship-captain, leading up to attainment of said ship, complete with UST between Kirk/space, Kirk/Enterprise, etc.

one.
why?:
"A SKY FOR SHOEING HORSES UNDER"
i only played chess once in my life and i lost...
looks like a sky for shoeing horses under
looks like a good sky to die under

two.
the shins:
"YOUNG PILGRIMS"
I fell into a winter slide
and ended up the kind of kid who goes down chutes too narrow
just eking out my measly pies.
But I learned fast how to keep my head up 'cause I
know there is this side of me that
wants to grab the yoke from the pilot and just
fly the whole mess into the sea.

three.
the mountain goats:
"THIS YEAR"
I am going to make it through this year

If it kills me

I drove home in the California dusk

I could feel the alcohol inside of me hum

Pictured the look on my stepfather's face

Ready for the bad things to come

four.
the red hot chili peppers:
"SCAR TISSUE"
Step outside but not to brawl
Autumn's sweet, we call it fall
I'll make it to the moon if I have to crawl

five.
bare jr.:
"YOU BLEW ME OFF"
All or nothing...
more or less
Insult me ruthlessly,
oh, you're the best
you blew me off,
it turned me on

six.
coldplay:
"BIGGER STRONGER"
I wanna be bigger, stronger, drive a faster car,
At the touch of a button,
I can go anywhere I wanna go
And drive around my faster car,
I will settle for nothing less,
I will settle for nothing less
I think I wanna change my altitude

seven.
michael giacchino:
"ENTERPRISING YOUNG MEN"

[INSTRUMENTAL]

eight.
interpol:
"TAKE YOU ON A CRUISE"
We sail today
Tears drown in the wake of delight
There's nothing like this built today
You'll never see a finer ship in your life
Along the way
The sea will crowd us with lovers at night
There's nothing like this built today
You'll never see a finer ship
Or receive a better tip in your life

nine.
the rolling stones:
"JUMPIN' JACK FLASH"
I was born in a cross-fire hurricane
And I howled at my ma in the driving rain,
But it's all right now, infact it's a gas

So is your username a reference to "Take You On a Cruise"? That never occurred to me until I was putting this post together.

I was thinking about your mix, and I like the way you've mixed Kirk's redneck sort of past with his adventurous and heroic new life. I added two songs to make my personal JTK playlist. Thoughts? Please don't take this as criticism or anything, I'm just having fun :)

Radiohead: Airbag
In a fast german car
I'm amazed that I survived
An airbag saved my life
In an interstellar burst
I am back to save the universe

Matthew Good Band: Long Way Down
Today I'm leaving
This bullshit one horse town
Full of cowboys and indians
Who only have balls when there's a camera around

Durr, sorry, I always forget that Matthew Good Band pretty much is not famous anywhere but Canada. Duh. Here's a youtube of the song:

Wow, "Airbag" works just awesomely. I never paid much attention to the lyrics of that song.
I'm excited to get such a thoughtful comment, you definitely got the jist of the mix. Since you came up with these songs in such a short time I almost want to nudge you into making your own :)

Well, this is a really thoughtful fanmix. The lyrics work really well.

Haha, maybe I will make one of my own. It would have to be for another character though, because I think my Kirk playlist would basically be a copy of yours!

So, this was my favourite fanmix, ages ago. I loved every song on it so much, and they all made me think of Jim so fucking much it hurt... and now my computer's crashed, and I've lost it. I'm so glad I found the post again, but now I can't get the download link to work. I click on Download, it says "it should start soon", and repeat ad nauseum.

So, I was wondering if there was any way you could check it on your end, or post it to another site or something if it's the site (um, mediafire maybe?), if it's not a huge bother. Because I miss this mix so so so much, especially This Year and a Sky For Shoeing Horses Under!

Here you go! (I'm pretty sure that's the right zip...tell me if it isn't). I'm glad to hear you enjoyed this enough to hunt it down. My sympathies for the computer calamity, though.
