-Pennsylvania Trip was fun. We did a lot of four-wheeling in the woods (LOL, no, we're not really the hiking type) while we were at camp, and the last day we were there we drove through New York to go see Niagara Falls (I'd never been. It was fun, but I wished we could have crossed into Canada. Fuck passports.) And on the way back we stopped into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum, which was actually way cooler than I expected.

-Finally saw X-Men First Class, and oh my god. OH MY GOD.

I'm definitely not a "real fan" of X-Men; most of what I know about the canon is what I read off the back of my friend's trading cards when I was a kid. But I did really love Singer's first movie and thought the others had their moments (never saw the Wolverine one :/ ). So I'm a newb and I don't know if there's any preexisting depiction of how Erik and Charles met and eventually fell apart, but I liked many many things about this version. The way that they meet is amazingly epic <3

Other things:

-Loved the retro-ness, not just in the sets but in the general feel of the movie. That COMPLETELY AWESOME montage that had Erik and Charles going around picking up all the fellow mutants had this music that felt like something right out of a 60's crime flick. The design of the end credits was stunning.
-I know that they were only both around for like five minutes of the movie, but I'm going to be very disappointed if fandom hasn't caught on to the fact that Havok and Darwin were totally (would-have-been) boyfriends.
-Out of ALLLLLL the mutants they could pick from, they had to have an Angel? I just thought she was kinda cheesy.
-I really liked that they addressed self-image issues, especially with Mystique. There's this one little line in the first X-Men, when she says, "It's people like you who were the reason I was afraid to go to school as a child." I bet after this movie I won't be able to look at the more villainous Mystique quite the same way again. The way that she not only was hurt by the way people talked about her appearance but sometimes internalized it said a lot about how being forgiving of and living alongside "normal" people can never be easy for these characters.
-Charles and Raven were so damn cute. I was bracing for the turning point in that relationship possibly more than I was with him and Erik, because I wasn't really prepared for how much I'd care about it going in.
-Fassbender is way fine, and a much better actor than I expected. I wanted to root for his Magneto. I already knew McAvoy was good, but he brought much more of a personality into Xavier than I imagined. His Charles makes me think of what a younger Dumbledore might have been like. And their chemistry together was perfect. I really felt a little disappointed that there wasn't a bit more time put into that relationship in the film, but in their scenes together you couldn't doubt that they were close.
-Total newb!gasm here, but Azazel was a fucking awesome villain. (Yeah, isn't this guy supposed to be Nightcrawler's dad or something? Makes sense.)
-The Wolverine cameo, I flaaaiiilled. They threw him an 'F' bomb too :DDDDDD

[livejournal.com profile] sci_fi_shipper asked:
1. If you had unlimited time and creativity was flowing, what fic would you write?
There are many fics I've been extremely into the idea of doing but have come to accept I probably wouldn't have the time to write. Like there are a couple that I feel would do better if they were super-long and actually sort of episodic in format which I really can't commit to, one being a Star Trek fic that would be a fusion with the Harry Potter universe; the other is a Supernatural AU in which Dean is a supposed orphan with more bad luck than could possibly be a coincidence, Sam is a girl (for reasons that are apparently supernaturally prescribed), and they meet accidentally without a clue that they're related when he tells her that's a bitchin' Impala she's got there, and she eventually teaches him hunting even though he annoys the crap out of her half the time. My favorite thing about that SPN idea is that I was going to have Sam and Dean go to a Lez Zeppelin concert together.
2. Have you ever strongly shipped any fictional characters, but never felt inspired to write fic about them?
It's hard to think of any that I haven't at least tried to write fic for, actually. The one example that comes to mind is that I really love the recent Bond franchise and a couple pairings from it but would probably never write fic for it. And I find it difficult to write fic for classic films.
3. Describe your dream house.
I want like, a legit cottage. Or like a people-sized hobbit hole.
4. Offer a piece advice to an aspiring writer.
Have a schedule, and stop working when you're still inspired rather than when you're stuck so that you can pick up a good pace again the next time you sit down. Sign out of Tumblr. Also, this quote.
5. Running a marathon, cheering from the sidelines or what marathon?
Haha, I've done none of these, but I have on-again-off-again participated in the MS Walk. I think I'm really the cheering-from-the-sidelines type.

[livejournal.com profile] nazkey asked:
1. What other fandoms besides BSG do you follow/are passionate about?
Star Trek (mainly original series and reboot, at least at the moment) and Supernatural are the other big ones. I also love Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Mad Men and Misfits, but don't keep up with the fandoms all that much. Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad series would be one of my favorite fandoms if it really had a fandom to speak of (heh).
2. If you could be a fictional character for a day, who would you be and why?
The Doctor, because that could make it a very long day, and I could go literally anywhere.
3. What are your hobbies?
These days I don't really have any besides reading/writing. I used to play a couple instruments and loved it, but haven't done that since community college. I enjoy baking on occasion, if that counts.
4. What is your favorite childhood memory?
The thing I miss the most about childhood is being carried to bed by my dad when I fell asleep in the living room. I would often be pretending to be fast asleep so that I wouldn't have to get up and walk to bed :)
5. Er .. what do you do for a living?
LOL...I am that ubiquitous "between jobs" at the moment. I very recently finished a seasonal job as a test scorer, and I have no specific ambitions besides finding something I don't hate. I'm probably going to look into substitute teaching for a while.

[livejournal.com profile] kag523 asked:
1) I love your username! What's the story behind it?
Thanks! Nothing besides the fact that "96 Tears" is an old song by the band ? and the Mysterians. (The singer's real name was actually legally changed to a question mark. I've heard he is generally a pretty odd guy.)
2) If you had to be someone else (currently living) for a day, who would you be, and why?
I would be someone who is a (good) mother, so I could say I tried it.
3) Either or, question. If you either had to start back at the beginning of your life - (Nope, even further... keep going... That's right, day one)- and relive it all again OR you had to jump forward ten years and miss them (trusting YOU to live them as you normally would), what would you choose and why?
I'd have to go back. I think I have a pretty good ten years ahead of me.

4) What's the creepiest / weirdest / scariest (you choose) thing that you will admit to doing?
Apparently I won't admit to very much because I can't come up with anything very interesting, LOL. A pretty weird thing is that I used to fill out all kinds of internet quizzes as my original fictional characters to see what results they would get.

5) Choose one fictional character who best fits who you (currently) are and tell me why you ARE that character.
I want to say Pippin Took (apparently I'm feeling very hobbity). He's not particularly brave but loyalty gets him far. I'm a bit flighty and single-minded with moments of (I would imagine) surprising eloquence, and that reminds me of him.

X-Men first class was amazing, it lived up to my expectations and more! It was cleverly scripted and directed, and really well-acted –I’ve been a fan of James McAvoy for a long time and I loved him in the role, but I was impressed with Fassbender. He is a fine actor (and damn hot!) and his performance as Magneto was spot on. Loved the chemistry between those two.

The Wolverine cameo, I flaaaiiilled.
Hee. It was a total nerd-gasm (the boyfriend and I actually started clapping LOL).

Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad series would be one of my favorite fandoms if it really had a fandom to speak of (heh).
LOL. Same here! There should be a fandom for this series –and a Cassie/Rob shipper community, ha! I would be so into it.

This meme sounds like the perfect excuse to update my journal, so... Come at me, bro! :)

LOL, I think everyone at the theater clapped at that part when I saw it, it was awesome.

Yay, questions:

1) Are there are books you'd love to see adapted into a movie (or that have already been adapted but you think they could have done a better job with)?
2) What is your favorite mythical creature?
3) What are the best and worst things about your job?
4) What do you wish you could spend more time doing?
5) What are your favorite bands?

ok, I was not going to watch XMen at the cinema, because of the way they've totally messed up the whole team line-up, but your enthusiasm now is giving me second thoughts. Because if I were to watch it at all, it would be for Xavier and Magneto in their youth. They're awesome together in the comics, and they made them awesome in the other films, so it follows that they're done the same here.

But the rest? Mystique and the White Queen *in* the Xmen in their youth? This was - and still is - my biggest deterrent. I don't mind changes, so long as they don't completely go against a character's history/personality; and this fact does. Plus, I'm miffed that Banshee is a teenager (I had a crush on him in the comics when I was 13, why oh why did they make him a teenager?). Is he even Irish? I can't tell from the trailer.

Also, the girl named Angel? She should be Pixie. Why on earth did they change the name?

But yeah. Rant aside, you've made me wonder whether I should go watch it, instead of wait for it to come out on dvd... :PP

HUZZAR X-MEN FIRST CLASS
(take it from a huuuuuuuuuuuuge comics-nerd, they changed SO MUCH but did it SO WELL that I ain't even close to being mad omg omg ♥ this delightful bitch movie)

about Angel - it's actually her first name. She's not Pixie or a re-working of the guy with wings Ben Foster played in the horrible third movie. She's way out of her comics timeframe, but so many of the characters are that I don't really care.

Fandom TOTALLY HAS caught on to Havok/Darwin and I think that LIKE ME, THEY SEEM TO BE GOING "THERE IS TOTALLY A DELETED SCENE IN WHICH DARWIN COMES BACK" cause dude, there has to be. The entire THING of his power is that his body will rework itself so that he doesn't die. He's been airlocked! He got crushed by a giant metal robot that fell from the sky! He got beat up by a Norse goddess and the Hulk (at different times). He'll be back.

I was intensely fond of what they did with Mystique too. and I also thought McAvoy gave off a delightfully young-Dumbledore air (which further supports my no-longer-so-secret pet cracktheory that JKR based him & Grindlewald's relationship just a littttle bit off of Xavier and Magneto) :D
From: [identity profile] ninety6tears.livejournal.com
Having read in your post some of what is and isn't canon, I have to say, I went into this movie being like, "What if Erik has something to do with Charles ending up paralyzed??? OMG, the potential ANGST!" But my reaction was still literally gasping and like jumping in my seat when that actually happened. I imagine it might have felt a little bit like "HAY LET'S THROW VULCAN INTO A BLACK HOLE."

Darwin was so awesome, he better fucking be alive.

And Dumbledore/Grindelwald = Charles/Erik, oooooh. I do think the parallel occurred to me, though I find the latter a bit more heartbreaking because we know it wasn't exactly unrequited (I don't really know how the HP fanon commonly interprets it...or if anyone's ever asked Rowling if Grindelwald was also gay.)
ext_19953: (veronica mars is stronger than me)
From: [identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com
that's....a really good comparison, honestly, having that happen did not even OCCUR to me when I went into the movie. It was like a punch. In an amazing way! But an OMG;_____;!!!!!!♥:(!!! way.

this is what I'm sayin.

and....I never even thought Grindelwald might not have been into Dumbles too. That would just be TOO SAD! GIVE THE GUY LIKE FIVE MINUTES OF HAPPINESS WITH HIS BOYFRIEND BEFORE HE TOTALLY MAGNETOS OUT AND THEY HAVE TO BREAK UP AND HE HAS TO DEFEAT HIM LATER :( poor Albus. His life sucks!
From: [identity profile] ninety6tears.livejournal.com
Dude, I know. Cause Rowling has said that he pretty much goes celibate after he realizes how morally fucked up he was over this guy, so I'd like to think he at least got some if he was that intensely in love with him. (Jeez, why have I never read anything for this pairing? I really suck at HP fandom, LOL.)

omg your Grace icon <33333

Weeeeeeeeeeeeell unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of fic for that pairing, as least not that I've seen. BUT there is one that ties my whole heart in knots, yea verily, written by my own internet wife this isn't just nepotism, it is srsly so wonderful and slew me so hard that I told her I was going to rec it in my lj, but First Class came out very shortly afterward and ATE MY WHOLE BRAIN UP and I forgot =/ I suck and IT'S HERE AND IT'S GREAT. And you should read it (actually it was part of a prompt meme and you should check out the other fics she wrote for it, too. There's another amaaaazing HP one, and a Dean/future!Cas one that KILLED ME WITH FIRE, I say. Just while we're on the subject :D?)
