The Counterfeits (for
startrekbigbang) - master post
Nov. 5th, 2011 09:53 pmThe Counterfeits
Fandom: Star Trek AOS
Rating: M
Characters/Pairings: Kirk, Pike, McCoy, (sort of) original characters. Slight bit of Kirk/OC, eventual Kirk/Spock.
Genres: mystery/thriller/sci-fi/drama/romance
Summary: Several months after a disastrous investigation, Detective Jim Kirk has transferred out of New Dublin's murder squad and thinks he's done being anywhere near homicide. But just when he's settling into a different job, a dead body shows up with a stolen identity and a very familiar face. Reluctantly reunited with his old boss Christopher Pike, Kirk is asked to work a bizarre undercover operation in order to not only find out who killed the victim, but who created him. (Fusion based on Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad series - mainly The Likeness w/ some elements from In The Woods.)
Warnings: Violence, mentions of canon character death, semi-explicit sex, dubious methods of detective work, bogus science, psychopathy, unsolved mysteries, and rather a lot of smoking and drinking.
Word Count: ~84000

A/N:
Considering that not many people who come across this fic are likely to have read Tana French's books - and if you're giving it a chance when you haven't, I love you - I feel the need to make some kind of disclaimer hinting at just how much I stole. For one thing, if you haven't read the books but think you might, you may want to be wary about getting spoiled; however this fic probably parallels more major spoilers for In The Woods than for The Likeness.
The obvious thing that makes The Likeness pretty different from this story is that it isn't sci-fi; the only double involved in the novel is the victim, who is of no relation to the detective (the uncanny resemblance between the body and the detective can only be explained by fate; if you can get past that unlikely scenario, it's a great read).
Jim's role is based on Detective Cassie Maddox. She also has Big Bad Case baggage (I'd say more of it) and an ex-partner who is Rob Ryan, the main character of Tana's first book who was indeed victim to a mysterious traumatic incident in his childhood.
In the novel, "no pasts" was an odd rule among the victim's friends, who in actuality had unpleasant backgrounds and families. The tightly knitted group in the book has an arguably much more unhealthy attachment to each other; Daniel - who was partly translated into Danek - has a protectiveness of them that's heroic but he is also presented as a pretty troubled person.
It might interest some to know that I had already decided to write this fic before I'd quite finished Likeness, which may be why the ending is very different.
