the verve; A Northern Soul
Take a look into my eyes
I tell you so many lies and then I'll let you go into the night
And I don't think I'm coming down
I'm alive with something inside of me...
And I can't seem to get it out

pj harvey; The Devil
Come, come
On a night with no moon
Because all of my being
Is now in pining
What finally cheered me
Now seems insignificant

tame impala; Keep On Lying
I’ll just keep on lying to you
Should my cover ever blow
Would you ever let it go?
There is something you should know
But hell if I’d ever let it show

pavement; Cream of Gold
I sensed the toxic aura
from the second we touched,
You were stitched up venom
and I was the cursed from the Vedic
Time is a one way track and I am not coming back,
I dream in beige, why'd you leave me so far now

fiona apple; A Mistake
I've acquired quite a taste for
A well-made mistake
I wanna make a mistake
Why can't I make a mistake?
I'm always doing what I think I should
Almost always doing everybody good

pj harvey & john parish; Black Hearted Love
Who would suspect me of this rapture?
And who but my black hearted love
When you call out my name in rapture
I volunteer my soul for murder
I wish this moment here forever

how to destroy angels; A Drowning
Swarms of locusts fill the sky
Maybe I'd just disappear
If I can't keep my head above the tide
Please, anyone
I don't think I can
Save myself, I'm drowning here

bt; Dark Heart Dawning
I've been cut but never bled
Though your dark heart is dawning
This child can see a light ahead
Though I came up in it
I'm not defined by it

the beta band; Needles In My Eyes
Last night though you looked so old
I felt like smiling, smiling while I'm dying
You left me cold, you left me cold
Needles in my eyes won't cripple me tonight
Twisting up my mind, please pull me through the light

about

When The Stand was first published in 1978 it was the arduous result of Stephen King's goal from his youth to someday write a fantasy novel capturing the epic and mythological scope of The Lord of the Rings but in an iconically American setting. The first quarter or so of the lengthy novel describes the chaos and eventual desolation in the course of a plague that wipes out 99.4% of the population; the rest involves a fundamental pull between good and evil among the survivors as they travel and settle in two polarized communities.
Nadine Cross enters the story when she and a badly traumatized boy she's been traveling with find the character Larry Underwood, and she initially appears as no more than Larry observes her to be: caring, normal, a lovely woman. Later on we learn her secret: While all the other convening survivors seem to dream of a mysterious figure referred to as "the dark man" in counterpoint to the visions of a virtuous leader called Mother Abagail, Nadine only ever dreams of that man she knows is named Randall Flagg, and she has sensed his presence since long before the apocalypse. Ever since she was a teenager Nadine has understood that somebody powerful wants her, and wants to be her first, because of an unexplainable impulse to protect her "purity" that has made her unable to take a lover. Though she has long since recognized her own cycle of leading on men who end up confused if not heartbroken by her sudden change of heart, she struggles harder than ever between her growing desire for Larry and the temptation to go looking for the dark man. By the end, Nadine's conflict with the supernatural comes to show us both her virtues and her faults.
The nature of Randall Flagg's ongoing possession of her sexuality—and seemingly even her moral compass—is one of the more horrifying aspects to be offered in The Stand. Stephen King has said that the character of Flagg was partly inspired by the criminal leader Donald DeFreeze; by extension Nadine could be understandably characterized as having a type of Stockholm syndrome because of how long she's been under the villain's influence. She wants and fears Flagg in equal measures, and even though she instinctively knows that she could be rid of him if she slept with someone else, it's possible that after many years of being isolated because of her own strange behavior she fears that losing that grim magic would leave her lonelier than ever.
