Erm. Um. I would not have expected to be this disappointed that Star Trek did not get one of the ten Oscar noms for best pic, but I am in fact a little heartbroken, and have not brought myself to actually go look at the list. All I know is District 9 made it, and Trek didn't.
District 9. Which I liked, but um. What.
A meme for my troubles.

- don't tag the person who tagged you or say that you tag 'whoever wants to do it'

1. I come from a very musical family, and I'm going to segue this into talking about my siblings, I guess. My first name ("Layla") is indeed inspired by the Eric Clapton song, because my dad has a mancrush on Clapton. He nearly named my brother Eric, but my mother said "no, Zazu, anything but that!" so he opened up the baby names book and picked the first name he liked, which was Aaron (true story). Mother had less sophisticated taste and is responsible for my brother's middle name being Duran. My dad can't seem to make up his mind which song involving a Sara my sister was named after, but I'm not sure anymore why they didn't just go with Erica on one of us. Anyway, my name is awesome, and hers hopefully has nothing to do with Jefferson Starship.

2. Speaking of music, I did play piano and loved it. I also played flute, but wish I hadn't. I have the occasional time when I wonder if, had I picked a musical career, would I feel about writing the way I feel about music these days, but I don't think I would. Besides, being a music student seems like absolute hell.

3. I have a scar that kind of blends into my left eyebrow that is the result of a dog nearly eating my face or something when I was still a baby. Between the woman whose dog did this and the lady who put her bras in our freezer, my family had some bad/weird babysitters. My other scar - this is kinda gross, but it was painless - is from my earring getting pulled out while I was sleeping. It's healed up most of the way and people only sometimes notice, but one guy who liked me thought it was pretty hardcore.

4. I would read comics five times as often as I do if I wasn't so picky about the art style.

5. I've basically been writing fanfic for longer than I knew it was called fanfiction. The first I can remember of it is in grade school when my sister and I wrote a Star Wars story together. Growing up, we would often do what we would unquestionably consider crack!fic now with whatever we were currently obsessed with, sometimes throwing a notebook back and forth throughout a school day. We never, ever actually managed to finish any of these, and whenever we briefly consider collaborating on something now we kind of joke that it would probably fall to the same curse.

6. My alcohol preferences: I pretty much don't like mixed drinks. Anything that's alcohol + sweet/chocalatey/fruity stuff usually = gross to me. I like hard ciders, I like Jagermeister, I like vodka, I like some wines, and I like irish whiskey. And I love Blue Moons for exactly five minutes and then I'm bored. That's as far as I've gotten in what I'll drink.

7. One of my best college friends says that her first impression of me was that I seemed "sort of asexual."

I'm fuckin' ECSTATIC District 9 made it (I really, really loved that movie, though). My personal "not Trek but THIS, excuse me, WHAT" movie is The Blind Side.

and I used to play flute too :D

I did like it. I got made fun of for crying at it, actually? (Yeah, this bullshit from a man who likes The Notebook more than I do, LOL.) But to me it's kind of like it kicked Trek out of the "okay, okay, we'll give a nom to your little *sci-fi* movie" slot. I need to look at the rest of the list, I'm sure I won't have seen like anything else because I've seen nothing this year/nothing comes to my town.

Flute was fun. But it seemed to guarantee sitting with too many of the girly girls throughout school. Too much stigma against guys learning flute.

LOL, our alcohol preferences are exact opposites.

I do like mimosas, actually, those are pretty fruity. And this apple-flavored shot my brother ordered me once.

Violin and clarinet are both pretty hard to get the hang of, from what I know. And LOL, I would have LOVED to play drums.

Also, I love you're name! It's so pretty!!! Oh, thank you! : )

I never expected Trek to actually get nominated. I simply didn't think that Hollywood would actually nominate an all-out scifi/adventure film.

ha, I don't mind the art in comic books (unless it's trully appaling), if the plot is good enough. Otherwise, I'd never have read Gaiman's 'The Sandman', and I wouldn't know what utter brilliance I'd be missing...!

also, our taste in alcohol is *completely* opposite. I only like sweet mixed drinks - the fruitier the better! :-P

I definitely wouldn't have ever expected if they hadn't upped the nominations to ten, and even if it got nominated I wouldn't expect it to win, but still. Meh.

Sandman was kind of fun in how the artists changed throughout, so sometimes I loved the style and sometimes I didn't.
But oh oh oh I have to throw a crossover rec at you: http://barrowjane.livejournal.com/1485.html

a Sandman/Star Trek crossover?!

I'll go read it asap! thanks! *hugs and runs off, wriggling in excitement*

(by the by, I *love* Sandman to bits. seriously, I was sad for a week when I finished the series. To this day, it's my very favourite of all of Gaiman's works)

I think it was my introduction to Gaiman, and OMG, I never wanted it to end. Absolutely epic and tragic and beautiful.
