Recently a couple little fancasts for Tana French's books have popped up on Tumblr, only some of which have been even remotely congruous to the descriptions of the characters or of the fact that the novels are set in Ireland or just of my image of them. Since the current theme at [livejournal.com profile] picspammy is "Crime and Law Enforcement" I figured it would be fitting to stop whining and do my own. I had a hard time narrowing down how many characters I would do and settled on sticking to the guards and, hypocritically enough, I've managed to only cast half of the characters who would ideally be played by Irish actors with Irish actors. But hey, no yankees.

(Colm Meaney | O'Kelly)
(Paul Bettany | Sam O'Neill)
(Colin Farrell | Mick "Scorcher" Kennedy)
(Domnhall Gleeson | Stephen Moran)

Good choices, I approve! Cumberbatch fits with the “fairly handsome in an offbeat way” description, though it’s difficult for me to picture him as Rob because, well, Sherlock, haha. I always find funny that I tend to see Rob as a guy less on the offbeat side and more conventionally handsome –partly because how he is humble but not too humble when he describes himself physically and because it’s pretty obvious that he has no problem in getting the attention from the ladies (Sophie Miller, Heather, that chick from the pub). Mmm… And what about Fassbender? He is half Irish.

It’s funny that you mention Paul Bettany as Sam because a few days ago I was chatting with a RL friend about ITW possible casting choices and he was the first name that popped up.

And Colin Farrell amuses me a bit as Scorcher because though I can’t remember his description from Faithful Place at all, I always envisioned him as someone physically bland and unattractive LOL.

At first I really wanted to avoid the Cumberbatch thing because he's played Sherlock but then I thought it was kind of awesome to imagine him playing someone who is also a detective but apart from that so unlike Holmes in so many ways. I actually thought of Fassbender (among others...Cillian Murphy is still a close runner-up) and didn't end up going with it, but he would nail the hell out of that role and it's pretty cool to imagine.

And for some reason I just love the idea of Colin Farrell playing somebody who is so...like, possibly attractive but at the same time just so uncool that he's sort of painful to behold, LOL (personally I've never found Colin all that attractive, but I know that's not popular opinion). He fits the description in the book, but there isn't a whole lot that describes him and Frank doesn't impart on whether he's good-looking, so there's definitely a lot left up to the imagination, though I admit I didn't exactly imagine him as a hottie.

I'd absolutely support the Cillian Murphy casting, if it ever happened :)

Cumberbatch is actually the first actor who popper to mind when I was reading because he's striking and aloof. I ultimately went with Laurence Fox (with darker hair) because I love his suits on Lewis.

I should have thought of Cillian Murphy because I love him. *happy sigh*

Considering the amount of female attention Cumberbatch does get, I think it's pretty easy to see him as Rob actually - he has the standoffish/loner vibe down to a T, and I'd have trouble seeing him as anything but a creep/sociopath too if I hadn't seen The Last Enemy.

My personal pick for Sam would be Tom Hiddleston, which is funny because I always imagined Sam as more conventionally good-looking, but Hiddleston's sweet enough to make it convincing.

I think Cumberbatch is very charming but I always imagine Rob as someone more conventionally good-looking. The same goes for Cillian Murphy, though I can definitely picture both.

Mmm… Tom Hiddleston. I’ve only seen him in Midnight in Paris, but physically it works fine. One thing is clear to me: Sam shouldn't be more attractive than Rob. Rob is the hot one and Sam is cute (I am so shallow, I know lol)

lol, me too! Though for me, Rob is the interesting one so he should look it (and be played by someone who is charismatic enough to make it believable), while Sam is good-looking but kind of boring (like the stereotypical image of a jock).

Sure, both men should be easy on the eyes but Rob needs to be the one I want to keep looking at, while with Sam it should be an 'ok, you look fine, I'm done looking at you now, next please.' (I am equally shallow, haha).

I don't really know any Irish actors (and I'm not really a fan of British actors in general because I can never understand the accents) so I don't really have any thoughts on the picspam (other than I find Cumberbatch to be rather unattractive so I hope they go in another direction. Lol #SHALLOW!) But I'm happy to see posts about this series anytime!

(Also...even though Cassie is a brunette--I always associate Rob and Cassie with pilots--so that's what they look like in my head. :)

Same here, I don't know too many Irish actors apart from Cillian Murphy, Michael Fassbender and Colin Farrell, but I think they play American a fair bit.

I have zero problems with pilots being Rob and Cassie in my head either. Jamie is part Irish after all, that is enough justification for me :) I know Katee is quite different from the physical description of Cassie - I pictured Kirsten Dunst with darker hair in a pixie cut after reading the bit in the book that describes her - but I will take pilots pretty much any way I can get them.

And now I am spamming this post, but I was wondering about alternatives for Cassie and thought of Carey Mulligan:

YES. I actually have come across pics of her that made me think "Hmm, Cassie?" She probably would be my second choice.

Carey Mulligan was who I pictured as Cassie while I was reading.
