Title: The Counterfeits
Fandom: Star Trek AOS
Characters/Pairings: Kirk, Pike, McCoy, sort-of-original characters. Slight bit of Kirk/OC, eventual Kirk/Spock.
Rating: M
Summary: Several months after a disastrous investigation, Detective Jim Kirk has transferred out of New Dublin's murder squad and thinks he's done being anywhere near homicide. But just when he's settling into a different job, a dead body shows up with a stolen identity and a very familiar face, and Kirk is asked to work a bizarre undercover operation in order to not only find out who killed the victim, but who created him. [Fusion based on Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad series - mainly The Likeness w/ some elements from In The Woods.]
Warnings: Violence (mostly non-explicit w/ one somewhat gory incident), mentions of canon character death, dubious methods of detective work, bogus science, psychopathy, unsolved mysteries, and rather a lot of smoking and drinking.

Zachary Quinto came out casually mentioned that he is gay in NY magazine. Everything was beautiful and no one was shocked.

Let me tell you what happened to me this morning when I was putting on my damn shoes. I got out my Toms from the bottom of the shoe pile - Yay, I haven't worn you in a while, shoes. I love you, shoes. Let's go get breakfast. I get into my right shoe and then I get into my left shoe and I'm like Why is there like a crumpled-up receipt or something in the bottom of my shoe? Take it off, try to shake it out, nothing happens. That should have been my warning. Instead I reach my goddamn hand into that shoe and reach into the toe and PAPER DOESN'T MOVE OH MY GOD. Take out my hand and one of the BIGGEST FUCKING SPIDERS I HAVE EVER SEEN IS CRAWLING UP MY HAND. OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD.

In about half of a second I've shaken it off and stuck to the fucking ceiling or whatever and Shep's in the room yelling, "What!? What is it?...Use words-OH MY GOD THAT THING'S HUGE."

"THAT WAS IN MY SHOE."

"HOLY SHIT."

After he kills this little fucker with a boot I'm getting a second look at it, like maybe it was only my sheer terror that made me think this thing was that huge, but no. Biggest dead spider I've ever seen.

I'm so weird about spiders, let me tell you. Intellectually, I don't get why I'm afraid of them. Unlike more serious arachnophobes, I'm okay with looking at pictures of them and I even think sometimes that they're really cool-looking (some of them are even cute), and I get really annoyed with people who prissily hate them for existing and can't stand the thought of them because they're like so disgusting. But I don't want them on me, and when shit like this happens I totally freak out.

And then later there's always the guilt. Why do I always kill them when they're not doing anything to me? Like this little dude. How miraculous is it that he didn't bite me, either in the foot or the hand? He was probably just chilling out, and then here comes this foot jamming in on his pad and at first he's just like, "Oh okay, I'm just gonna scrunch here in the corner like, okay, yeah," and then a second later he politely lets me usher him out of the shoe and then is probably like DAMN GIRL WHAT ARE YOU SCREAMING FOR OH JESUS.

At least I'm not the same about snakes. Snakes can get all up on me, I love snakes.

I say I say I say (Simon Armitage)
Anyone here had a go at themselves
for a laugh? Anyone opened their wrists
with a blade in the bath? Those in the dark
at the back, listen hard. Those at the front
in the know, those of us who have, hands up,
let's show that inch of lacerated skin
between the forearm and the fist. Let's tell it
like it is: strong drink, a crimson tidemark
round the tub, a yard of lint, white towels
washed a dozen times, still pink. Tough luck.
A passion then, for watches, bangles, cuffs.
A likely story: you were lashed by brambles,
picking berries from the woods. Come clean, come good,
repeat with me the punch line 'Just like blood'
when those at the back rush forward to say
how a little love goes a long long long way.

I finished reading Faithful Place a couple days ago and I just have to say...

Scorcher? The next book. Is going to be about SCORCHER?
LOLOLOLOL

I mean, okay, I'm pretty sure Tana can't write a book I won't like and it's fair to say that he's probably a little twisted as the butt of Frank's jokes, but man. If anything I would have thought she'd use Moran, the rookie who was giving Frank all the inside info. I liked him. At least the setting of Broken Harbour sounds interesting, from what I've read.

In general I loved Faithful Place. It was missing Tana's usual dash of the surreal, but that seemed fitting with Frank's character.

I'm feeling seriously moody and insecure this week. I don't know what the hell is going on. I need to get back on a sane sleeping schedule and get more sunlight or something, lords.

So I watched the pilot of American Horror Story and it will not be possible to categorize my thoughts about it. I'm not sure if I like it but I will definitely keep watching for at least a couple episodes. It feels like something that would be right up Clive Barker's alley (if you're familiar with his stories rather than the films), were the gay stereotypes removed. As with most TV shows I find half of the actors annoyingly bad, but Jessica Lange was pretty enjoyable and I cannot wait for ZQ to show up.
I really can't pass up remarking, though, that if the mom is going to be mostly "characterized" by her adherence to organic products I'm going to gag at the writing. By the end of the ep I was convinced that might be building up to something because it was brought up a ridiculous amount of times.
Also, this show has the potential to not be so good for people with pregnancy/miscarriage triggers cause woah, they could be taking this to an unsettling place.
What I can't help wondering is, on the chance that the show is continued for very long, will the family survive, or will new characters be introduced, maybe every season, and keep dying? And then reappear in later episodes as dead people? XD

I'm finally done with the writing-the-thing-rather-than-editing-it of my big bang, though I kind of feel like I hate the ending and may end up rewriting it for the tenth time. It's longer than the one I wrote last year.

Please tell me the new delicious site is just having some kinks and isn't going to always be like this. If I click on a tag that's supposed to have over a hundred links, all I get is one page of the most recent bookmarks with that tag. The navigation links at the main page only go up to 4. My tag bundles are gone.
I would have moved all my bookmarks if I knew it was gonna suck this bad.

I'm so weird about Supernatural lately. I liked a lot of things about the last season so I don't know why it took me sitting down and watching an episode to feel like "Oh, yeah! This my show!" So anyway, the season premiere was kinda way better than I expected.
Brief thoughts on that )

For my T & B fans:

ninety6tears: jim w/ red bground (Default)
-WAY TO MAKE NEW LJ FRIENDS AND THEN NOT UPDATE, LAYLA.

-I'm always amazed when people talk about getting ideas for fics from dreams because it never happens to me, but then I had a CASSIE AND ROB dream which gave me an idea for an AU I would write if I ever figured out writing fic for the DMS series. (I've tried, really. I may yet do it. We shall see.) My boyfran is already very puzzled by how often I ask him random questions about being a cop. He however is totally in the Cassie/Rob boat since I made him read the books, so, he probably would approve.
(I guess it would seem really random that I'm having Tana French dreams, but I finally picked up on reading Faithful Place so it's back on my mind. Oh, and my STBB is a fusion with The Likeness, but let's not talk about that.)

-A man dressed up as Gumby tried to rob a 7-11 in California. Read the article. It's about as hilarious as it sounds.

-I'm generally pretty cool with the Tiger & Bunny fandom, but I'm becoming disturbed by the amount of people who can only ship Kotetsu with Tomoe even if it means the guy spends the rest of his life never getting over his wife. I may come from an exceptionally opinionated stance on whether that's a healthy idea of romance, but I don't know, I just find it sorta creepy that people feel like chaining down the widowed meets this ideal of eternal love. And here I was thinking that character death was kinda the shortcut to people being able to multi-ship. I might prefer that ten times as many people were in the "HOW DARE YOU TAINT THE BROMANCE WITH YOUR SHIPPING" attitude because I'm at least very used to that, LOL.

I am so so so excited to get drunk and celebrate my birthday with my best friends this week because I've decided we're going to watch this movie WHETHER THEY LIKE IT OR NOT.

I don't remember very much about it but I know I thought it was the coolest thing ever when I was like five. I had to ask my sister to tell me the name of it because for years I've just been remembering it as "that movie with the hot dude who catches a bullet with his teeth."

-I am terribly sorry to anyone following me on Tumblr who doesn't have Savior and doesn't care about Tiger & Bunny. This fandom is spoiling me with more awesome fanart that I know what to do with.

-Speaking of which, there was this post going around Tumblr talking about how supposedly T&B is supposed to take place in (obviously some alternate-futuristic version of) the late 1970s. And of course everyone's like "THIS EXPLAINS IT. THIS IS WHY BUNNY LOOKS LIKE FARRAH FAWCETT!"

At least, it's the closest we'll ever come to having an explanation for Barnaby's hair. I mean...

Now I'm not one to believe anything that goes around Tumblr, but the Wiki timeline does place present events at Sternbild's 1978, so maybe they're on to something. The cars could certainly look more dated if they were going to run with that look, but a lot of the clothes make sense. Personally, I'm really attached to this idea because it just seems perfect for the Legend generation to be an overidealized thing of the 50s, you know?
Also, disco.

-Yeah, it's official that every time I get into a new anime I start wanting to rewatch every anime series I have ever loved. I've got a serious urge for some Samurai Champloo right now and I found this fanvid last night and freaked out because it is awesome.
And it's all action so it doesn't even really matter if you haven't seen any Champloo.

-I recently found out that as a bigass combined x-mas/b-day gift for my boyfran, his family is taking both of us on a Caribbean cruise in February. I AM EXCITE.

Hai guys. I missed you while LJ was being beat up.

I hope I'm not the only person who's having trouble uploading icons? That seems to be the only thing that's still going wonky on my end.

Let's see, do I have anything to talk about?

-Cowboys & Aliens was satisfactory. I enjoyed that it actually felt like a western and like a sci-fi rather than just a costume sci-fi, if you know what I mean. Of course there wasn't much of a fable to it besides "Don't point anything at Daniel Craig unless you want to die."

-I'm still in love with Tiger & Bunny. In fact, I'm also frustrated about it because I have this theory that is something I thought we were supposed to assume at first and is now only a theory because I've realized all the other fans saw it a completely different way and maybe I'm just dumb. Which would be fine, except that the repercussions of what-I-thought-happened would be this huge potential angstbomb of relationship development and I'm really disappointed that I'm likely wrong. I'm probably going to post about it in the comm just to see if I can have the comfort of anyone else going "Ah shit, that would be cool."

-I don't think I've mentioned anything about what I'm doing for [livejournal.com profile] startrekbigbang and I'm not going to blab about it in much detail, but it's the first time I've written any kind of mystery (screw you, Tana French, I'm not supposed to get into this kind of thing) and half of the time I want to whine about how hard it is but I think I just might be managing to write something with a couple cool twists that people may not easily predict. I will be so elated if I actually pull this off, LOL.
ninety6tears: jim w/ red bground (Default)
-I'm not usually lucky enough to have a whole lot of fandom-related dreams, but lately books I'm reading keep popping up in my dreams. After I finished The Likeness? I dreamt that I was Cassie Maddox hanging out in Whitethorn House, and very psychedelically, it was supposed to be a dream that Cassie was having. I've dreamt that I was dreaming before, but not dreaming as a completely different person. Wooaah.
More amusingly, I'm reading Dune right now, and last night I dreamt I started reading about where I left off in the book and that these two new characters show up and I was totally getting into their dynamic and slashing them together and everything, only to wake up and realize those characters don't exist. HAHA MY BRAIN IS REALLY EMBARRASSING ME RIGHT NOW.

-I'm going to have to start hunting for a beta for my Trek big bang soon. There's a super-convenient match-up post at [livejournal.com profile] stbbsupport, and I should look over the betas listed again, but a lot of the people who seem ideal look like they've already been approached, or else there's some other issue like they say "I don't like dark stuff," which is fine, but I'm just not sure how dark they mean by dark. A plot that revolves around a murder and dubious actions of police officers and all might not be their cup of tea for all I know, even though they're probably just meaning "If your fic has nine characters getting tortured by Klingons and time-traveling Nazis in the mirror-verse and even more of them dying, it's probably not for me."
And then there are the people who would be just fine except that they make themselves a little unapproachable by having these, um, quality standards. I totally understand just saying "I probably wouldn't be interested in betaing this pairing" or even "I don't like AUs," but saying things like, "I won't read OOC stuff" seems like...kinda missing the point? Cause like, most people make an effort to keep things in-character, but sometimes it's hard, which is kinda why they might want to look for a beta reader?

-I've gotten into a new anime. This is the first time this has happened in many a year for me. It's called Tiger & Bunny, and it's about (LOL) superheroes who have corporate sponsors (or as Shep called them, "Nascar Heroes"). The characters (with the exception of the leads) have variably "That's just my day job" mentalities and there's a lot of slow-as-hell-building-of-trust between the title characters (who are very, very shippable, I am told, and can believe).

-New favorite TV Trope I didn't know existed until recently: EVERYTHING'S WORSE WITH BEARS. If you can guess what the top quote's gonna be before clicking, I will give you a hug. Though I'm a little disappointed that one Avatar: TLA episode isn't listed as an inversion.

Title: A Game Called Life
(one-shot, 6413 words)
Characters: The Weasley twins
Summary: "What the spell is supposed to require is a capacity for certain wands to recognize not only one, but two masters."
Rating: PG-13
Warning: Concerns a canon character death.
A/N: Apparently there is no canon on what Fred and George's wands are made out of, so I was at liberty to make it up. (In the movies, their wands don't even look alike, but I had to contradict that.)
Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] _tehrin for the quick beta.

Once again, there's an element of near-to-but-not-really-fantasy to French's work, and with The Likeness the premise is quite a bit more uncanny, and is the driving force of the plot rather than something winking from the edges.

Many reviewers read the entire damn thing but still mostly criticized it for the unlikelihood of the central whammy, being of course that Maddox has had a double running around in Dublin, wearing the name of her old alias and thus somewhat chillingly erasing any traces of where she really came from. I'm sure all of those reviewers are really fun to bring to the movies. I mean, come on. If an author thinks up a premise as uniquely ridiculous as that, it's practically their responsibility to write it. This book could be a disaster, but it's not. As with the first book, it may not please those looking solely for a mystery, but the premise would have been tragically wasted on a less character-studied plot.

We really should be using the actual body for this...but I figured that might be a little weird. )

-Pennsylvania Trip was fun. We did a lot of four-wheeling in the woods (LOL, no, we're not really the hiking type) while we were at camp, and the last day we were there we drove through New York to go see Niagara Falls (I'd never been. It was fun, but I wished we could have crossed into Canada. Fuck passports.) And on the way back we stopped into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum, which was actually way cooler than I expected.

-Finally saw X-Men First Class, and oh my god. OH MY GOD. somewhat spoilery stuff... )

Title: Dog Years
(2/2)
Characters/Pairings: In Our Nature OCs + AOS (non-mirror) characters (Gene/Alel, Jill/Scotty, Tom, McCoy)
Rating: M
Warnings: Non-graphic violence, implications of psychologically abusive (past) relationships, mentions of slavery and related abuse, semi-explicit sex.
Summary: Placing trust in a handful of former imperial soldiers is hardly easy for a group of slave-born Romulans on the Terran Empire's home world, even if the four humans may not be what they seem. It's hard enough to separate friend from foe among their own species, to confide in each other, to trust that they could be loved.

The only thing I will say about the last SPN is that, having had an unfinished fic sitting around in which John and Dean briefly quote The Good The Bad and The Ugly at each other, I'm ecstatic (if completely unsurprised) that Dean is a Clint Eastwood fanatic. Heh.

This is kind of overdue to the point of being pointless, but should anyone be wondering about the status of a certain Star Trek WIP of mine: Book 2 of In Our Nature has words, and it has had words for a long time. I can't promise anything about when it's coming, but it's coming. At this point it feels like it would just make sense to do it for this year's big bang, but I really cringe at the idea that it would take me that long, so I'll optimistically say that that's not likely.

I picked up The Likeness. Cassie Jeanne Maddox, I cannot even handle how much more awesome you are in first person.
